  1. Used to fly hang gliders with a bloke who'd have a choof before flying. Didn't seem to affect his flying but he did occasionally forget to drop his feet out of the bag before landing.
  2. Big, slow, slow... don't have the figures on me. People with similar aircraft - CH750, Sav - assure me that the standard size is sufficient.
  3. Daylight savings are over now, but for the past few month we have been getting up earlier than the banana-benders.
  4. Thanks Nev - next question - you mention "top of the line" Chinese radiators, do any brand names spring to mind as being better than others?
  5. I'm not a parachuting expert by any means, but that chute looks a little small for the weight of a Caravan too...
  6. Seeking informed opinion. An original Rotax radiator is northwards of $700 from Bert Flood. If you google "Rotax 912 radiator" you are flooded with ads from Ebay for replacements, from about $150 - $300. Is the build quality of the original such that it actually should be 2.5 - 5 times the price of an aftermarket item?
  7. Yeah... kind of... but a delta (sans canards) would also have a rear-mounted wing like a duck... seems a bit thin really. But the word has been around since 1906 - Wikipedia reckons it started with the Santos-Dumont 14 bis which, when you look at that box-shaped front stabilizer, actually does look a bit like a duck.
  8. "Canard" also means "duck" (in French) - I've always been curious as to why a front HS is called a "canard". Not like you see ducks flying around with a little set of wings sticking out of their neck.
  9. All good mate, I think my problem is solved so good luck with your mate's!
  10. Thanks all. Bob, are you saying there's no ducting or shrouds on the Sav from the intake to the radiators?
  11. They wouldn't have much range of speed to do that. Guessing the Lightning isn't great at slow speed! Pity they couldn't have put a Mozzie in there too.
  12. Can you remove the kit elevator flange and fabricate a new one?
  13. Hi all, After some advice about the placement of the oil cooler and whether it needs its own air supply (NACA duct + 3" SCAT hose to a moulded shroud)? There's a couple of different positions from Zenith. From the 2002 FWF instructions they show it bolted below the radiator, like so (I possibly could get away with this given the holes in the front of my cowl) However later installations show it bolted to a welded bracket on the engine mount arm, angled and with a fitted shroud which receives air feed from a NACA duct on the side of the cowling. I'm guessing they did it that way (in later versions) because they've mounted the water radiator vertically in order to have a narrow vertical opening in the newer cowl, leaving no room for the oil cooler under the radiator. My cowl has not only a large intake for the water radiator but a smaller chin intake (see yellow arrow), so I'm tempted to go with the older method. Before I commit though - are there any advantages going with the newer method? Thanks! Cheers, Marty
  14. Cessna Caravan?
  15. Damn, it didn't show the most interesting thing from band camp! I've already bought fire sleeve (ebay) to slow fire not looks. Bunnings Aerospace sell stainless zip ties that look similar to the band camps.
  16. Talking about fire sleeve, what do you use to clamp it at each end?
  17. I loved it. What an amazing system, up and running for 6 years saving lives. Mind officially blown.
  18. I bought some from Bert Flood in 2020. On the invoice the part number is 842950 - Lock Nut M8-SW12, at that time they were $3.01 each.
  19. I was out near YCBG today and spotted this beauty. Anyone know what it is? I thought Yak or Nanchang, but it seems smaller and looks like a single cockpit. I like the Ukrainian star on the tail.
  20. If you can afford a Diamond the flight costs aren't going to bother you.
  21. ...or you're a Chinese balloon... oh, wait.
  22. If you ever glide at the same rate as the earth's curvature, your glide angle is 0.
  23. Well, I got the oil hatch done. Decided to go with the DZUS because otherwise I'd have to carry a different screwdriver for the camloc. Besides, I had the spare DZUS. I made the recessed bit out of a section of a "first attempt" fibreglass cowl that the owner of the moulds had given me, so it matched the curvature. Epoxied that to the underside of my cowl and then hinged the door. Size seems about right for my arm, especially as a bit of wrestling is needed with the oil tank cap - are they always this tight??
  24. Thanks Bob! And everyone else too. Yes I have to epoxy in a recess which is going to be difficult. Interesting how they've used nut plates on the hinge as well in that one.
  25. You might be right Bob. Talking of the oil inspection hatch, I just drew it up on the top cowl but before I start cutting I'll ask some advice. How big would you make it? I'm thinking around 130mm x 130mm (D shaped with the flat side longitudinal on the cowl to allow the hinge). That would probably make it realistically 120mm x 110 mm allowing for the seating under including the camlock/dzus in the round end of the D. Comments? Bigger? Smaller? (I have big hands!)
