    As mentioned - the balsa glider kit. Turned out to be a great little kit, all parts laser cut and fit perfectly. Whole thing went together in about 3 days. Just waiting now on the radio and battery pack for the motor - I thought I'd be able to use my old radios (which have collected dust for about 30 years) but unfortunately they're beyond salvage. Still, new ones are heaps cheaper than they used to be.

    Spent an hour with some mildly soapy warm water... I want to start making the cover so thought I'd better start with a clean plane! In the end I went thru 6 buckets and the water in each one was brown when I finished. Amazing how much dust gets on it in the shed. So now she's the cleanest she's ever been since the sheets of aluminium were unpacked 14 years ago! Next job is to get a big roll of paper, lay out and cut, then cut the car cover up and sew it together. Anyway, thought I'd share a pic or two of the clean plane!

    According to Wiki, .303 ball rounds (ie projectile only) weigh 11.3g and tracer 8.4g. Not sure how much the shell casing and propellant would weigh but it'd have to be more than the bullet. If you assume they're ejecting the casings out of the aircraft as well you could probably more than double that estimate. (Having said that, a minute is a long time, and bombers lose much more weight than that quite quickly... a Lancaster carried up to 6.3 tonnes of bombs).

    Timely discussion, I was about to ask about Polycarbonate windscreens. Assume that similar (couple of drops of detergent in water, microfibre cloth rinsed often, then dry microfibre) is ok?

    Thanks Ian for your time, money and effort you put into maintaining these sites. As others have said over on Social Australia, they are fantastic to maintain social connections. Remembering when "off topic" was a forum as part of Rec Flying - I think you made it a separate site as there were many members who didn't want to talk politics/religion/whatever, and didn't like that forum filling up the "what's new" screen. Could you roll it back into Rec Flying but have an option where people can opt out of seeing it? That way those of us who like talking general shit can still do so, without bothering anyone who only wants to talk shit about planes... 🙂

    Hi Fallowdeer, In the end I decided to make one - I've made the plane so the cover shouldn't be impossible.

    Yeah the quote was a bit high for me (not saying they're expensive, just that I'm cheap). I've ordered a car cover from Ebay and will set to work with scissors and the wife's sewing machine when it arrives.

    I still have the scars on 3 fingers on my left hand where I was careless around a prop as a teenager. Light blue is a silly colour for a prop, but reaching for the needle valve through the prop arc is even sillier.

    I want to get a weather proof cover for the 701 - mainly because the windscreen and top polycarbonate get very dusty where it's currently sitting. Just sent a request for quote to Punkin Head - are there any other suppliers you can recommend? Anyone made their own?

    Thanks Planey! I tend to stick with normal foul language on the occasion that things don't go as planned. Have to say though, that's a reasonably rare event as the Zenith plans are generally spot on - any f-ups are my own fault!

    Wow, people still do control line? I tried that when I was 14. Spent more time trying to adjust the needle valve than I did flying. Just ordered an electric powered glider kit from Ali express, I reckon I can fly it from the neighbours property up the road. Laser cut balsa, none of this polystyrene stuff.

    Nylocs on the outer bolts, but the bolts that go to the prop flange go into press fit round nuts and are drilled head.

    On with the Bolly! Not final fit, not torqued up and not pitched. (Definitely not lock wired!). Just to allow me to manually turn the motor, since I installed the round nuts my old wooden plank "prop" won't fit. 230mm (9") clearance to ground.

    Second flaperon on yesterday. Still have to adjust the fuselage slots a little to allow for full up/down with and without flap.

    Nice video of a Mars doing a flight test. Interestingly, single tail instead of twin tails like the one shown above. Impressive beast on the water!
