  1. I haven't cut my filter open yet. I have not found any specks of metal in previous filters. Maybe I'll run one of my super magnets through the oil. If you're at the club this weekend I'll bring the gear and we can have a look. (Then do a leak down test?).
  2. Just a standard light microscope, subject illuminated from below using diffused LED light, hence, bright field illumination. I used 100x and 400x and couldn't see anything. Microscopy is a hobby going back 40 years, but I make no claim as to being an expert.
  3. I decided to have a close look at the oil I drained from my Jab this weekend just past. It's done about 12 hours. By close look, I mean really close so I dragged out the microscope. I examined a drop of oil from the oil filter and a drop of new oil. Nothing to be seen, not a sausage. Both looked the same. Now we're talking about an engine that's done < 150 hours, still in diapers so to speak. I'll do the same at 500 hours (at the rate I'm flying, that will be 2057) and see what the oil looks like then.
  4. That's a lot of flying. Jabiru or Rotax engine?
  5. I inspect/adjust/clean the plugs when they come out for the leak-down test. And, I change the oil and filter regardless of hours.
  6. In the Jabiru engine maintenance manual (JEM0002-7) it indicates (on page 48 of 106) item 17 says replace spark plugs. Now, I'm doing the annual but only flew about 10 hours since the last annual. I'm not replacing the plugs. Do I tick the box or what? Reading the previous posts here, at my current rate of flying, matter transporters will be in common use before I get 500 hours or so on my Jabiru. Bruce, I'll swap a nice red for a leak-down test, how about it?
  7. I often wake up bright eyed and bushy tailed at 4 am. Gives me the sh*ts because I usually get back to sleep 30 minutes before it's time to get up. Then, at work, when I want to be bright eyed and bushy tailed, I'm in zombie mode. Part of the aging process I guess.
  8. Swarming technology is quite fascinating and can be used in areas outside of defense. Imagine a bunch of drones keeping watch over your apple orchard. A few flying around to keep the birds away while the others recharge their batteries. The imagination is the limit...
  9. Looks to me like the stupidity is behind the camera, not in front. Hillbillies.
  10. I used to drop my well read magazines off at the Doctor, Dentist or hair dresser and they proved very popular. Better than the women's weekly or who's who magazines.
  11. The propeller will probably end up in somebody's pool room.
  12. I'll say one thing, if I ever have the horrid experience of pranging my plane, and am in a position to do so, I'll be letting folks on here know the facts rather than what the media say or what others 'hear'. Even eye witness accounts can be wildly inaccurate.
  13. Yes, I think it was an intrusion and downright rude to poke a camera at the guy. And turn your &*^% camera so we see the video as it should be seen, wide screen!!!! Her'es hoping he and his plane are up and flying soon as possible.
  14. I have flown in light rain, but when on finals it became scary because without wipers, the rain on the windscreen made it pretty hard to see the runway.
  15. Is that factory built or home built?
  16. The strongest cross wind I have experienced was while flying the Tobago at Parafield. I am not sure of the wind strength, maybe 30 knots but I was holding 30° drift on the downwind leg and on finals. The good thing was that the wind was steady, not all over the place. The landings were quite good.
  17. I believe there is a program where partners can learn enough to land a plane if their pilot partner has something go wrong. This program was created so that the passenger can be trained by an instructor rather than the partner.
  18. I landed my Jabiru in hot (>30°) and gusty conditions and found my wind tip almost hitting the ground. Won't fly in that crap again.
  19. When I was a boy I wanted to fly, Getting my licence was a dream come true. Flying my brand new Jabiru from Bundaberg back to Gawler was beyond anything I ever thought possible. Looking forward to eyeballing it when it arrives.
  20. Part of my job is video editing, creating videos etc. Lose the slide effects, use fades only. People will stay in their seats that way. Otherwise, great stuff.
  21. That first photo looks like it was taken at 30,000 feet above the ground, until you see the chain and windsock.
  22. I wish the clowns would set things up so I could pay with my debit (not credit) card. Must be too hard for them.
  23. The trees are dropping more than leaves and bark - huge branches have fallen from several trees in my area. Would crush a car if one were under them.
