  1. Thanks FV, that information is helpful. I am concerned that if I give it away for a few years, I might never come back to flying, and that would be a shame. The $100 non-flying membership would be good if it came with a paper copy of Sport Pilot, otherwise I can't see I would get much out of it.
  2. Thanks OK, that is another option for me to consider. Maybe just have a few hours, closely spaced, with an with an instructor every 6 months or so, and keep the BFR up to date.
  3. I have not been getting to do enough flying recently. The usual pressures on time that arise from having three kids at primary school, a busy job and a wife who is definitely not into flying, means that I will be taking an extended break. And, I just don't think it is wise to be going flying for an hour or two every couple of months. I have my certificate, but intend to allow my RA Aus membership to lapse. Presumably, after a few years break, I will be able to rejoin as an RA Aus member and my certificate will still be valid with all endorsements. Then, would it be just a matter of getting back up to speed with an instructor and getting my BFR signed off? Is that correct? I am trying to figure out if there is any reason why I would want to maintain my RA Aus membership over an extended period when I am not flying.
  4. Looks as though it tangled with a tree, very luck to walk away
  5. with quad bikes there are a huge number of serious injuries in addition to the fatalaties. A friend of mine rolled his quad and has now had seven reconstructive surgeries on his face. He is recognizable now, but still has at least one surgery to go. In-laws are farmers and refuse to get a quad bike, they know others who have been seriously injured also.
  6. Only if you make it a problem.
  7. Hi KP, The Ltd in a company name stands for "limited liability", usually in the order of $10 per member or something like that, although happy to be corrected.
  8. I have visited the site several times and it always works fine, yet to have a problem.
  9. By the way, I am not advocating that anyone should avoid paying parking charges! The letter I wrote was in relation to a specific set of circumstances and contract.
  10. Technically the parking companies are suing you for breach of contract and losses under that contract. The amounts can't be punitive, ie fines. One company demanded that I pay a "fine" and I wrote to them and told them to get stuffed, take me to court. I never heard from them again.
  11. As far as I am aware, a company cannot issue fines, so I can't see that ever happening.
  12. Other than being able to say "I told you so", I don't really see the point in trying to challenge the validity of the election. Somewhat surprisingly perhaps, Courts will occassioanlly interpret an Act in a pragmatic way without relying on an overly meticulous verbal analysis of the actual words used. Not to mention this would be a hugely expensive exercise.
  13. Mine arrived with the ballot paper and reply paid envelope
  14. Hi FV, Regarding point 2 under 'Governance', I believe that as a general rule legal advice should not be distributed to members. It should remain "privileged and confidential", otherwise RAA risks waiving legal privilege. Depending on the legal advice (such as non-contentious issue like changing the constitution), it might not really matter, but would rather the organisation take a conservative approach.
  15. You never hear the centre/left bleating about media bias, despite Rudd/Gillard/Shorten copping it in the media just as much as any conservative politician. I think the conservatives are a bit thin-skinned. Like to call a spade a spade, but don't like it in return.
  16. Hi Kasper, I guess what I was trying to say is that the Corporations Act, and the application of it, already anticipates the election of office bearers before a corporate entity formally exists through registration. Hence, it may not necessarily be an issue. But, I can certainly see your point.
  17. Hi Kasper, I qualify what is coming next by stating that I am not a lawyer. However, it is my understanding that under the Corporations Act, there is no period in which a company can be registered without the minimum required directors (3 for RAA). So, effectively every company must elect its directors before the company officially exists through completion of registration. I know that in the current circumstances RAA has already elected the three initial directors, and hence what I have outlined may not be relevant. Or perhaps the process of seeking registration is sufficient to allow for the election of the additional directors?
  18. I agree Nev. I was a director of a community childcare centre for a while and responsible for maintenance. The building was over a hundred years old and had all kinds of issues. It was a pretty thankless task. There is almost guaranteed to be someone unhappy with any decision you make, particularly where significant costs are involved. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. I would also like to see the directors of RAA given a fair go.
  19. Considering it Nev? You would get my vote!
  20. Congratulations David!
  21. I found that the exam questions were very poorly expressed, which causes some confusion about what they are actually asking. Not a good way to educate and test people.
  22. When I was 19, I visited my dad in San Fransisco. My step-brother flew up from LA in a RG Cessna. Watched him land at San Jose, then we jumped in for a low level loops around San Fran (probably can't do that anymore) then landed over at Half Moon Bay. Jumped out, had a coffee, then back in for the return flight to San Jose. Then we watched a few aircraft doing circuits for a while. I was fascinated by it all, and was amazed when the brother in law told me that some of the pilots were practising glide approaches. Always thought aircraft would fall out of the sky without engine power. The seed had been planted, but study (and hence no money) meant I couldn't do anything about it for several years. What turned out to be many years later, the wife bought me the book QF32. Strangely enough it got me really excited about learning to fly. Now have my certificate and am loving flying, just don't get to do it often enough.
  23. Thanks Mike, I have been enjoying the videos. I have a few to catch up on, but they won't last me until the end of the month. Have a great holiday.
