I'll start by saying I'm not sure if this fits under general discussion, incidents and accidents, weather or somewhere else. What I will say is get yourselves a copy of Australian Flying January/February 2008 issue. then sit down and read the article on page 54 titled Very Nearly History. It is a spine tingling account of a Melbourne based Warrior pilot that flew into IMC on the 29th of July 2007 on his way back from Echuca around Kilmore Gap. There were 3 pob and he was only day VFR rated. What ultimately saved him was that he confessed to having screwed up and he let ATC help him at the same time as remaining calm during the ordeal. This is real and VERY close to home for some of us. What brought it home for me is that I know one of the ATC people that assisted this chap on the day. It makes compelling reading and I look forward to further discussions. Regards Phil

I'm getting the distinct feeling that being a glider tug pilot is NOT a great occupation.:;)1: I take it that you wouldn't be using a 100hp rotax powered sportstar to pull a glider aloft?:confused: Thanks for your replies sofar guys....I'm learning at a great rate of knots;) regards Phil

A friend of mine has recently aquired his glider pilots certificate and has been doing a bit of towing behind an Evektor Sportstar.;) (Apparently it works ok as a combination.) I was asked when I was going to get my glider towing endorsment. :;)2: I've never considered glider towing but dont have a problem with it so I suppose the questions are.... 1. Is there an endorsement for glider towing? 2. Does it fit in the RAA category or do I need to use my PPL? 3. Any idea who would do it? I've never flown a Sportstar but imagine it would be similar to the Flysynthesis Texan which I do have time in. All comments welcome. thanks guys :) Regards Phil

Just had a go at that myself. 12 years since I did the BAK...brought back memories. I passed again and had some deficiencies in the knowledge highlighted like... Gliders are in operation at the field, what marker is used to indicate this? a double white cross displayed adjacent to the primary wind indicator. Just relearnt this one. Probably a good idea considering I fly into known glider operation areas. Haven't been in while they're operating yet but it's only a matter of time....:) I'd challenge everyone to have a go at this just for the fun of it....it'll bring back memories....;) Regards Phil

I'll agree with Blueshed on the Texan. I'd put the cruise at 105knots to be comfortable though. It'll land in a couple hundred meters without flaps (I've yet to use them) and take off in the same distance. It'll hold a climb of 900fpm at max weight, burns 16lph and is easy to fly and has great visibility. Downside....wear a hat and some sunscreen or you will pay with sunburn. Good to see your not Jabiru bashing there Pelorus32 .... The J160 climbs fine ;);) (when its 20 degrees) I'm expecting the J170 to be much better. ;) Regards Phil

Ozzie.... you appear to have forgotten 1 thing....you are dealing with a female and asking her to be logical...;) whoops...that's gunna get me a hiding :big_grin::black_eye: There's a great book out by Barbara and Allan Pease called "Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps" It explains the differences between us and makes for a good laugh at the same time..;) Regards Phil
