  1. I did a check ride in a DH82a last winter in the yarra valley,,,I've never felt air go past bloody cold to where it feels like it's burning till then Matt
  2. G'day Chris, good luck with the PPL ,I think a mate of mine was a pilot with the Tigermoth outfit on the coast, pretty cool old jiggers! Matty
  3. I see NOTHING( must use Hollywood German accent)
  4. so how does bernoulli relate to that airfoil? As for it not being important ,it depends on the person, I like to have an understanding of what's happening, some mightn't care and thats fine , but I always thought what was taught in ground school (bernoulli)just didn't add up,,,,, matty
  5. Newton seemed to have a neat and tidy explanation , although his laws don't explain why the top of a wing needs the shape it has, I prefer to call it magic , and leave at that Matty
  6. that was pretty bad mate,,,,I smiled ,but,,,,,
  7. just had a look at the video,,,far out ,good to see all survive, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz1FYP5hNkw
  8. close formation,,,,just got too close!, crazy photos though, and lucky meat bombers!
  9. get a dumbass kid with a high pain thresh hold, should handle the impact I reckon, problem solved, glad I could help!
  10. love the spot landings, had a young FI get shirty cause I dumped the flaps in a wurrier just at touch down, still scored alright ,but he gave me heaps about it ,,,,,till the CFI recounted a story about helping a young woman win a comp by dumping the flaps for her ,,she won ! I don't get to many of the comps but always have a good day when I do, we've got one next Sunday at Coldstream with a BBQ lunch, all welcome !! (shameless plug now done) Matty
  11. yeh we do the stupid golf thing, I went from winner to mug cause I couldn't hit a bloody golf ball to save my life,,,,I'm over it now though matty
  12. as far as reducing risk this is the better route, still has the pucker factor but a lot better than the other way matty
  13. This should be sent to NASA, I think they have problems with Bernoulli s theory!
  14. Yeh, adrenaline would change things I'm sure, certainly turns me from cool n calm to a sweaty mess! last time I went up in a seeker would've been last August, not sure if it had any more mods though. I wasn't mentioning the RV for seeker type ops, but rather to see how they handle engine out approaches, I recall you'd had some issues with them ,but hadn't flown one at that point, my mate made the offer to let you see one in action , he had access to a 6,7 and a 10. The Maules look very capable, the 'Big Rocks Long Props' guy does incredible things in his modded one Matty
  15. Interesting Dafydd, I've flown a Seeker and thought it was pretty ,,,erm,,odd , heavy on the controls ,didn't fly slow real well( not supercub slow anyway , which is a shame with the focus they have for it),,,didn't go fast either,,,,and having 'zero' yaw control in a stall didn't do much for me ,I'm a low timer so maybe I'm not getting it but having a rudder that's doing nothing in a stall doesn't seem like a plus to me , I'm keen to hear more on it though . we met a while back while you were working on your Blanik at YHBA, did you take up the offer of flying the RV's with the local fella ? Matty
  16. we do a flour bombing comp at our club pretty regularly, it's surprisingly difficult from 500 feet to it a target,,,,,but incredibly easy to nearly hit a cessna,,,,go figure ! As for lollies ,perhaps they could be placed on the ground the day before and then have the kiddies look skyward as the plane flies over at 1000agl ,informing then ( at a time sufficient for said lollies to land ) that the little sweeties( the lollies not the kids) are out there for the taking,,,,,,,,actually to save fuel ( and the planet ) you could hold the event in the flight line of an airport ,,,the kids wont know , and think of the PR ,,,,QANTAS do lolly drops from a dash 8,,,, how cool matty
  17. I work in an industry that deals with insurers all day ,everyday , they will cover stuff that is marginal rather than go legal, over to top stupid claims ,forget it, something as vague and subjective as "demonstrated" and' Pilots capabilities" ,I'd take that bet ! and do,will and have in the past, along with the total variables with the wind direction and strength near the ground an insurer would be mad to get legal over what is a pittance in the company bottom line. matty
  18. a 170kmh marshmallow will still smart pretty good, but at least you'll have something yummy for the ambo ride!!!
  19. I've seen float planes launch from trailers behind cars on utube, looks pretty tricky but I'd say its common in the states where they swap gear for the seasons Matty
  20. we need a "crazy bastard" button for stories like that,,, matty
  21. gotta do the cessna wriggle everytime !!
  22. A local pilot has an old straight rail 172 with a tail dragger conversion , Io360 and a CSU ,a STOL kit, beautiful paint and interior trim ,,,,,I reckon it's about perfect for cost fun and perve factor Matty
  23. a C182 is a great plane, the only one better is a C185, but, they're not that fast for the 55litres an hour, that works out to about $120 bucks to do 130 kias, cool planes ,I love em but they are pricey to live with . also got an expensive prop twirling away up front! Matty
  24. AMEN brother, I lament the cotton wool brigade, I got asked about whether we should rescue sailors in the southern ocean , well, I reckon a big YES, so many people live out there lives on a bloody couch, and with the ridiculous crap our pollies have spent our money on,,,,,a few thousand bucks to give an adventurer a hand is a pittance. I reckon good on them, it was well planned and if the damn engine had gone okay it would've been a non event for the rest of us and a pretty cool event in the two aviators lives. I'm keen to fly my RV6 to NZ when it's done ,it'll be well planned ,thought out trip, and if it goes pear shaped then so be it, Matty
