Welcome Mangoman, what are your flying tastes? models, weight shift(trikes), 3 axis ultralights, GA or just watching FA18's scream by at 300ft in full afterburner. Or maybe you're like most of the rest of us, if it flys, you're into it.:big_grin: David

I don't think the answer is more and more rules and regs, although they do have a place. It really comes down to attitude and in flying that means airmanship. Few of us are as good as we think we are so if we try to be better we might actually end up as good as we thought we were. David -
Hey Darren, I think you can count on it being perfect flying weather at The Oaks this weekend. I know this because I'll be working with no chance of flying. Now next Tuesday that will probably be a different matter, just like last Tuesday. David

Hi and welcome. Looks like you've got some big ambitions there and I hope you make it all the way to fullfilling them. I would suggest that you take it one step at a time and others have said try a TIF first. There would be several options open to you at The Oaks that might give you a better idea on the best way to achieve your goals;) David

As to joining a club and leaning to fly check out "clubs" on the left hand side of the header. I think the The Oaks is going to be the place for you, great little field and a great bunch of people. Great story Doug, could of been written by Henry (Lawson that is) himself, cept I dont think he held a pilots certificate. Please keep them coming. And like you I can't understand why the rest of the world isn't consumed by the thrill of flight. David

My own experience, limited as it is and I havn't had an engine out on take off to-date, is to be thorough in the run up before you hit the runway. Once you've started rolling I tend to find a quick glance at the instruments in general tells you that they are live, beyond that I tend to focus on heading down the centre of the runway and the airspeed indicator. Subconsciously I think your ear tends to tune to the engine note and in all the training I've done the minute that changes the stick goes forward and you start looking for the reason and the next action. Once airborne is when my problems start, I'm generally that excited to be in the air again I start forgetting my proceedures and checks. I guess this means I need more and more and more practice:cool: David

I have to go over to UK tomorrow and I contacted an old mate of mine to suggest we got together and had a beer or two. I also happened to mention that I had found out that Duxford had a flying weekend on the only weekend I would be there. I just got an e-mail from him telling me he has already got us tickets to the flying day. Spitfire heaven here I come:big_grin: :big_grin: :big_grin: , sorry I can't invite you all. David

I'm not one to gripe but since we all seem to be in the mood. I'm a bit inclined to Darren's point of view, why should I pay our government to prove that I'm not a terrorist. And before everybody gets upset and starts argueing that it's all for our own good to protect us from mass destruction look at the real facts. I'm not a terrorist, I dont think I'm smart enough for that but does anybody really think a plastic coated card is going to prove a problem for a bona fidi baddy. Accepting that it's a token reaction to 9/11 it should be quick and cheap or is it really another government revenue raiser? Sorry, I just paid my car rego and I don't feel very government friendly at the moment:censored: David

Give me a Spitfire anyday! On second thoughts, better not. At least, I think I would break every rule in the book, high speed low flying, illegal aerobatics etc; But it looks so beautifull and even standing still it looks like it's doing 200kts. Sexy dosn't even start to cover it. David
