  1. Fair enough... tough crowd in here, that's for sure
  2. Flat"ish" David "ISH" ..... I just wanted to put the video up
  3. Then how do you know what airspeed to approach at
  4. There are a few "flattish" ones in this video cut to about 2:50
  5. Hi Motz, Flying Dog, What is a Mode D transponder? (As opposed to mode A/C S etc). Just to clarify Flying Dog, you have put in an incident report on an aircraft which passed over and in front of you in Class G airspace, with min 1000' clearance horizontal and vertical, that you didn't see (until it passed by) because they did not talk on the radio?
  6. Just few torque settings to get right
  7. Sweet Bob!
  8. There aren't any #24 Drifters I know of unless it is a Fisher? 25 or 55? sure.
  9. You are correct...buy a plane, that is what RAA is all about, affordable aviation. Nominally and ADDED fudge factor: Purchase aircraft $15000 (582 Drifter ) 50 hours $100p/h instruction including endorsements $5000 another 150hours solo and XC flying @ $50p\h (fuel and maintenance) $7500 Total $27500 with $15000 equity...
  10. I did the river and creek runs as well my first few lessons, well before I could land (less than 3 times in any one attempt)
  11. I know of three out near Roma way for sale or soon to be... all wire braced: One 582 Wide Body pod, One 582 slim pod and one 503.

    Drifter Pics

Just because... 'Crazy Trike Pilots' So we all agree? The key goes in there.... OK so no Drifter in this one but there were a couple very near by,
  14. Embarrassed? The teens is a good price range! Mid to high teens will get you a great Drifter
  15. Hey seb I know here there a few Drifters out your way for sale... I will save my opinion on a comparison... no question at all which I prefer.
  16. Hey Frank, Good show sorry for the late reply been went flying and camped out at the strip. No doubt I will learn something also
  17. You seem to have taken some offence Frank, my sincere apologies, it was a very light hearted and jovial post (I thought that was apparent and those little guys at the end reflected that), the internet does not help as a medium in this context. I certainly wasn't asking you to explain yourself, on the contrary, I was interested in how you developed an understanding in your students for winds strengths and hence off field (no sock) landings. I will add finally that I agree with you 100%, all pilots should be proficient in knowing what the wind is doing with no winds socks at all (I guess I have about 1000)... but gaining that proficiency?
  18. How did the people you teach learn what the wind strength was? How to work that out when there was no sock? Obviously not from a calibrated sock, but surely they had SOME REFERENCE. Perhaps it was your advice with your undies on a pole blowing in the wind...("when my undies stand out straight like that it is blowing 20 bastards") regardless, the point is: a reference is required to learn what is happening so you can pick it when you have no sock.
  19. :clap:now I am going to have to substantially lift the quality of my footage and editing (not likely I don't have the patience.)
  20. Bonjour!
  21. Observation Frank, trees moving, ripples on the water, whitecaps, the wind in your face, that ballon flying by etc... reference: the calibrated wind sock is indicating 10knts you now know (or at least are learning) what 10 kts looks and feels like for when there is no wind sock
  22. No MM they will continue to carry on with the investigation and report to the Coroner under his/her responsibilities as stated above (s28 Coroners Act 2003 (Qld)) That is a very astute observation... read a few Coroners' Reports and they lament the very same thing... even their recommendations more often than not, (if ever) are not acted upon in aviation accidents RE CASA and ATSB (thankfully so though in some cases)... which takes us back to the whole Cth v State issue...
  23. One point for a calibrated wind sock....If you are new to flying and wind speeds then you need to have a reference to gauge the actual wind speed (kts) for future reference when you don't have a wind sock.
