  1. Instruments and glide calculators help, then pure skill Do a search on speeds to fly theory... it can all get a bit complicated and then it is also based on what you are attempting... speed over a course - average lift - sink etc. Basically you learn with experience - best glide speeds - best LD are the things you need to know. At its most basic level if it moves up in your field of view you are not going to make it, if it moves down you should be right, if it stays in place it depends on the net lift sink you get on the way. Yep Speed/energy = altitude, but it is finite of course and knowing what you have in the bank is the skill. The height you can gain is a factor of the length of the cable and whether it is reflex (run around pulleys) or static (pure tow), you need a pretty long cable for decent altitude. Most gliders can do aerobatics as the have a very broad speed range and retain energy better than most other aircraft...
  2. All flying is good! just your standard inter-discipline rivalry... HG and PG love to rag on each other for one reason or another: "If you lived in the ocean would you rather be a shark (HG) or a jellyfish (PG)... PG call HG coathangers, HG call PG shopping bags... etc etc ala Surfboards v Boogie boards, skateboards and roller blades, fixed wing v rotary All flying is good and has advantages and disadvantages PG just has more of the latter (HAHA) JUST JOKES! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-BvNh3jr8Y
  3. As a hang glider pilot........NO!
  4. This has some development potential
  5. That is my goal as well
  6. MEH no need to apologise to me , I only heard it as I hoped to see the damage sustained to the biplane... If you just want to have a bit of fun occaisionally (light/no wind) get a Microstick and a few spare batteries... taildragger certified pilots only
  7. From the commentary it appears as though the biplane took off then the R/C entered the runway and the biplane made an unannounced 'go around', smoke on for effect. When the guy (controller?) with the hand held saw the plane coming he told the biplane to go left and the RC to fly away...

  9. I do LOVE the landing gear... an exercise ball!
  10. Yep one battery (maybe two) and one speedy for each engine by the looks, given it is obviously controlled by torque differential (as opposed to movable disc) I wonder what happens if you lose a single engine... I think if an engine goes control becomes redundant
  11. Damn... I have fried enough speed controllers to be very concerned about having 16 of them to worry about
  12. I have a had a few hours, not licensed but so all with an instructor.
  13. PS Not sure how often they would be required, I note that the pedals on the Drifter are also held by the same size though drilled.
  14. SOMETHING YOU SHOULD NEVER TAKE APART! A-frame top of a Drifter
  15. Excellent thanks heaps too you both!
  16. Thanks Sue I will give him a call!
  17. OK this may be a duplicate thread as I just posted before but it does not appear anywhere ATM... Where do people get AN bolts in Australia, need an AN4 52A... would rather not have to wait for one from the USA as there is flying to be done!
  18. Thanks Wags!
  19. Thanks Dazza!
  20. Just browsing the local area on Nearmap and Logan Reserve Airport SE Qld (near Logan city south of Brisbane) drew my attention. I always knew it was there, it was some years ago I drove by and saw a RAA (AUF) aircraft in one of the paddocks off the end of one of the strips. Looked well stuck... maybe it was a Jab. Anyway, anyone know the history or present predicament of the place. Looks all privately owned, nice spot, but was wondering if an occasional landing was welcome or not?
  21. Indeed! The whole thing is getting some TLC... work and other commitments just keep on getting in the road. Bit by bit...
  22. Thanks eastmeg2...I went searching for some more info after I got the message about them being not allowed on as checked baggage. That rings true across the board for RPT but you can carry on under the specs you mention generally , however, it is still pretty unclear as it is usually mentions 'stored' in the device, and one spare battery 'for the device'. Not specific to stand alone battery anyway to save any dramas I had it freighted over and customs have held it for a week or so, just released yesterday. I expected it to be held up in customs as the lithium shows a return on the scan that resembles 'organic material' (maybe ordering it from Columbia had something to do with it as well ) I was a little concerned about the Rotax specifying minimum 16ah (as req 16amp charge rate) and it being 12amp but I understand it has a tested 5c charge capacity/ability though that is not recommended at all, 16 is fine.
  23. Nice work Tomo, sry I missed the evening and W/E. Bloody good aircraft that one... pretty sure it was Floatplanes' original build
  24. Yep my arrived today as well...
