  1. Then entering deep stall or 'falling leaf' higher than normal flare/stall, 10'.. 20'? would produce the same result and and maintaining best L/D or min sink before then would give you more options given you have no aileron in falling leaf.
  2. Yeh maybe he was a very skilled pilot, and I don't think he was an idiot. I think he was doing what many pilots would do... pulling the stick back hoping that will make him stay airborne longer, I dare say he was pedalling like a Tour de France contestant to keep it out of a spin. How does a fully stalled aircraft (which I understand this 'falling leaf' to be) achieve min sink? Min sink is never achieved in a stall. One thing I cannot reconcile with this falling leaf theory: right at stall is when you want the aircraft to touch down... the falling leaf part is just a deep stall uncorrected or purposefully maintained. Entering the stall just (immediately) before you ditched would give you less sink rate than a fully developed and continuing deep stall. Interesting discussion
  3. Yes of course we can only assume... he only just made it over the trees and was never assured of that the way the aircraft was flown, at incipient spin most of the way and 'best ditch' would be at lowest sink rate rate ... I think he just got lucky whether he intended to have the aircraft in the state it was or not.
  4. Not so skilful IMO assuming he was trying to hold it in a stall, that was the wrong state to have the aircraft in ... BEST GLIDE!

  7. I CARE Photo's of any work progress would be appreciated when it happens...

  9. Quality rant that! I agree with Adam and the context in which it was quite apparently written, attributing some self centred or selfish purpose to the post is a long bow to draw and an unnecessary and ill directed attack.
  10. Quite the "what if " Andy....flying an aircraft registered in someone else's name would not cause the type of drama you suggest. People do it all the time. Just the same as driving someone else's car. Just because it is a sale and it has not been transferred yet is moot. Have proof of sale/disposal, proof of purchase etc.... You are simply waiting for the appropriate authority to transfer the rego. Nothing illegal has occurred, nor anything to prevent you from flying the aircraft. If that were the case you (anyone) could not collect/fly your new plane until you received the new rego papers in the post. Ownership transfer precedes rego transfer.
  11. If the tiny tach is showing 80hrs that is just the time since it was first installed/used...
  12. Having sat in both flavours... there is a far more meditative resonance to the 912 (ignoring all other positive characteristics). Don't fall asleep!
  13. No battery change available need to get a new one...
  14. Hi Justin, 30lb would be the minimum I think + Oil tank, radiators and prop at least and sundry items ??? I know they banged a 912 on a frame at the Drifter factory with out any great WB problems, but you won't get ANY information out of them and the man that did it isn't there any more. I think the mounts would be your main hurdle.... Do it!

    Drifter Pics

Sorry Tonksy! SB 55-762 has just found a new home. David...The two Drifters (582WB and 912 WBFisher) and 912 Outback trike were flying me home. I delivered the Drifter to the happy new owner out past Inglewood near Yelarbon yesterday. Yoda (582WB), Selwyn (912WB) and Wormie (Trike) flew down from Tara to pick me up and we all headed back to Boonah. Bob Keen also come across from Dalby in his Pioneer Hawk 300 and we parked them up at the Flying Tigers, had a couple of ales then went and checked into the Motel and a few more ales and feed at the Dugandan pub. Great flight great night....
  17. EDIT: sorry Mark already identified that.
  18. I agree completely Andy it has limitations... but if you lose phone coverage I would propose you are flying VERY low and/or are on the ground, it would still provide a last fix to narrow down position. Not an absolute fix for sure and SPOT is still has advantages and this is not a replacement as such... but if you have a smart phone and no SPOT... like me, mad if you don't avail yourself of it.
  19. Slight thread drift but highly relevant (once again) the "Glympse" app is invaluable IMHO... real time internet tracking and history. No need for a Spot locator or subscription... this App is FREE. Of course it does not absolve the responsibility to have PLB/EPIRB but for our type of flying (mainly short hops over land) it would help with location much faster. Pitfall is it does not transmit as a distress call...
  20. MM I think, going by reports, he was well and truly in the whiteroom for a while... lost in non VMC.... and they had a short duration EPIRB activation they are obviously focusing on that being best estimation on last location.
  21. Yeh Maroochydore I would say.
  22. Forward Looking Infra-Red... as above Thermal Imaging...
