  1. Charley, a new retiree-greeter at Wal-Mart, just couldn't seem to get to work on time. Every day he was 5, 10, 15 minutes late. But he was a good worker, really tidy, clean-shaven, sharp-minded and a real credit to the company and obviously demonstrating their "Older Person Friendly" policies. One day the boss called him into the office for a talk. "Charley, I have to tell you, I like your work ethic, you do a bang-up job when you finally get here; but your being late so often is quite bothersome." "Yes, I know boss, and I am working on it." "Well good, you are a team player. That's what I like to hear.” “Yes sir, I understand your concern and I’ll try harder.” Seeming puzzled, the manager went on to comment, “It's odd though you’re coming in late. I know you're retired from the Armed Forces. What did they say to you there if you showed up in the morning so late and so often?" The old man looked down at the floor, then smiled. He chuckled quietly, then said with a grin, "They usually saluted and said, ‘Good morning, Admiral, can I get your coffee, sir?’”

  4. If you don't have a way out, a plan, an option, call it what you want, then you shouldn't be there. There have been times when i have thought, uh oh I shouldn't be here, and humans are not infallible, but surely it should be considered the exception rather than the norm....... I wonder if the pilots you speak of may have panicked due to incomplete training and the constant reference to engine failure equals loss of life.
  5. It continues to frustrate me that people make such a direct link between engine failure and loss of life. No wonder pilots panic when the inevitable happens. Regards Bill P.S I' m having a lot of fun with my 2 stroke which I wouldn't be able to afford if the option wasn't available.
  6. P Dan “DB” Cooper - $200,000 US – Only Unsolved Crime in US Aviation History He's the world's most famous fugitive. On the night before Thanksgiving, November 24, 1971, a passenger by the name of Dan Cooper boarded a plane in Portland, OR bound for Seattle. Clad in a suit and raincoat, wearing dark glasses and carrying a briefcase, he sat silently in the back of the plane. After calmly lighting a cigarette, he ordered a whiskey from the stewardess and then handed her a note. It read, 'I HAVE A BOMB IN MY BRIEFCASE. I WILL USE IT IF NECESSARY. I WANT YOU TO SIT NEXT TO ME. YOU ARE BEING HIJACKED.' He demanded $200,000 and four parachutes delivered to him in Seattle. When the plane landed, he released all the passengers, save for the pilot, co-pilot, and stewardess. Once the money was delivered in the middle of the brightly-lit tarmac, Cooper demanded the pilot take off for Mexico, flying at an altitude of 10,000 feet. Shortly after takeoff, over the mountains northwest of Portland, the six-foot-tall Cooper strapped on a parachute and jumped. He was never heard from again. Did he survive? In 1980, roughly $6000 was found of the money in bundles on a beach, but no signs of a body. The case remains open and is the only unsolved crime in US aviation history. (Link | Via)

  10. Birthday reminder. This week we celebrate a very special birthday. Monica Lewinsky turns 50! Can you believe it. It seems like only yesterday she was crawling around the floor of the White House on her hands and knees, putting everything in her mouth. They grow up so fast, don't they?

  14. Hi all, How many gig of data would you need to have on a plan to maintain an occasional flying habit. It doesn't use any download to maintain moving maps while in the air, does it? Thanks Regards Bill

  18. Hi Solomon, "Believe nothing you hear and half of what you see", this is a good saying and if you live by it it will stop you being let up the garden path. I have no idea what a Qantas captain earns, so can't say whether your friend is being honest or not. BUT if you are going to make big decisions in life (this one is going to take you years to accomplish) then you need to make sure that you prove the key points that are leading you in this direction rather than take somebody's word for it. Regards Bill
  19. Try going to a auto salvage yard, one where you can walk around in amongst the wrecks and find a pair you like. The ones on my wifes' 78 series landcruiser wagon would suit but I don't think there are too many of those around. Regards Bill
