  1. I suppose the the actuall best thing about the whole incident is that I could walk away and nothing other than pride was harmed. A bonus was that Nickdunks84 from this forum was there and graciously gave me a lift back to my camp site in his bearhawk. It was a short hop but I really did enjoy it and don't think that I thanked him for it. So thank you Nick I did appreciate the lift. There were other members of this forum there at the time and some may have some input as they saw it from the other side. I guess if you have to bend one you may as well do it in front of a bunch of other pilots so you can really get a good debrief.
  2. Watched it from start to finish and totally enjoyed. I got a buzz when he took over manual and the co-pilot sat back folded her arms and said have fun.
  3. Anthony The regulations allow for you to train in your own 19 rego aircraft. (you must be the owner). You do however need to find and instructor/CFI willing to train you in it. I am neither an instructor nor a CFI but I wouldn't be surprise if they wanted you to have the aircraft checked out by their own L2/LAME first. They would probably also want to see Maint/service records, although if the aircraft is coming from VH they may be content.
  4. I have landed many times with full flap, and certainly did plenty of it in training, but not in this aircraft. To be quite honest I do not think the Hanuman needs 3 stages of flap on 2nd stage it gives everything you need to land in all situations that I have been in. The 3rd stage is overkill and that is why I have only used them the couple of times. Hindsight being as good as it is, I now realise that I should have done 1 of the following. a. learned how to use the 3rd stage of flap properly by flying with an instructor more. or b. Disabled the 3rd stage so that I would not be tempted to use it at the wrong time and stuff it up. Step (a) would be the better solution and obviously when I get her up and running again that is what I shall do.
  5. If the load fell of the trailer, it was not secured. ie It was unsecured. It can only be one or the other.
  6. This is the second time that I have had the misfortune to start a thread in this section. After the last one I had actually hoped never to start another. Anyway I made a booboo and this is my story. I was away on a flyaway the week before Easter and having a ball. Flew down on Friday and did a few landings at a couple of strips. These were private strips on a property but well marked and used. On the Saturday morning I awoke feeling a little off colour (1st Warning Human Factors not 100% do not fly) and decided to stay at the campsite as everyone else went flying. After an hour or so I started to feel a bit better so decided to follow the rest of the guys. As I came in for this landing on a strip that was not difficult and I had landed on before there were quite a few other aircraft on the ground either side of the strip. As a result on final I actually started to feel cramped (2nd Warning Not comfy, go around or go somewhere that you are) Although the strip was plenty long enough for me to not only land but also come to a full stop and take off again I have no idea why but I got it into my head that I needed to land and stop before I reached the other aircraft. (3rd warning same as second really) All I had to do was keep on the centre line and land. Well I decided to land short and pulled 3rd stage of flaps. I had only ever landed twice before with full flaps on a strip i knew well under ideal conditions. Well from the minute I hit full flaps I was behind the airplane. It was like being on an elevator. At the end of the day I stalled it at flare height and dropped it onto the runway. In hindsight I probably needed 1000 more rpm which I should have applied at the same time as the flaps. but by the time I registered that I was flaring/landing. I do not remember it but I hit the magnetos as it stalled realising that I was to late for power I must have decided to protect the prop. As I say I do not remember doing it but I came to a stop in about 3 inches with the magnetos off and the fan stopped. So the damage. Alright I bent my plane on a strip the 1000 pilots had landed on and were standing watching me. OK maybe it was only 10 to 15 guys. So damage to pride huge. A bent nose wheel, a couple of bent fittings to the under carriage. Airplane 2 inches lower on one side than the other. Some brackets bent which means breaking the aircraft in half to replace and to date about 9 weeks on the ground. The good news is the parts should arrive next week and then hopefully 2 weeks to repair it but then I said 3 weeks to replace the motor and it took 7 months. In the short term it took me 36 hours and 2 round trips of 16 hours to get her home. That was a hectic 2 days. The most valuable lesson from it all to me is if it does not feel right than it probably isn't but more importantly is to take an instructor with me and actually learn the full capabilities on my airplane before I try them on my own..
  7. I actually said that the fact you are angry bothers me not one bit which is correct. That it bothers you is a different kettle of fish. As for my experiences with RACQ, they were in fact quite positive, RACQ were even kind enough to pay all my expenses on both occasions. My point there was that just because an insurance company say you are blame free does not make you blame free it possibly means the other party either couldn't be bothered or couldn't afford to fight it. Insurance companies always look for someone else to blame. The simple fact is you drove on the road with an unsecured load and placed other road users at risk and then tried to blame someone else. I see people on the road every day who are not competent to drive the vehicle or combination of vehicles that they are driving and that disappoints me and makes me angry at the system that allows it. I don't get angry at the people involved until they try to shed their responsibility and/or blame others. If I walked into your workplaces and placed others in danger through my incompetence I would expect them to get angry at me not at anyone else. When you take a motor vehicle on the road it is your responsibility to ensure you are competent to use it. If that makes me arrogant then I am guilty as charged but I would need to be judged by someone competent to do so before it bothered me. I probably should bite my tongue and back out of this discussion but the road is my workplace and I will not step back when I see something that is not right. If I am out of line I apologise to the other forum members but I have seen to many people killed and maimed on the roads to be able to do that.
  8. The fact that on two occasions I have had the RACQ legal department determine the one of my drivers was 100% at fault and on both occasions a judge has determined that my drivers had no fault makes me question the RACQ legal departments motive in anything involving an insurance claim. My comment on Double Pendulun effect was not meant to be belittling on the contrary in this forum of trying to learn from others mistakes I was trying to get people who have not heard of it to consider it. I can assure you that when I bring it up in caravan groups or worse still bike groups very few people actually understand the concept or just how dangerous it can be. That fact that you are angry about my comments bothers me not a bit even though that was not my intention. The fact that people drive on the roads with poorly loaded or dangerously loaded vehicles bothers me a lot. And that those people think it is someone elses fault when it all turns to crap bothers me more.
  9. What an interesting concept, that someone other than me the driver could be responsible for incorrect loading of a trailer. The driver should be aware of the abilities of themselves and their vehicles. If I loaded a truck incorrectly and killed someone out on the road I am certain that the judge would be happy for me to say but your honor the girl on the weighbridge said it looked ok. I find it difficult to understand that you could even consider it would be someone elses fault other than the driver. As for trailer and caravan licences, should be compolsury without doubt. Another point for anyone considering towing a trailer/caravan you should google double pendulum. It is a scary concept and We see the results every day we mostly just do not understand why.
  10. The glass is refillable.
  11. Anywhere off Cape Moreton is great for whale watching, as Chris says 300 metres so I stick at 1000'. Off Moreton you can see quite a lot from that height. I have even seen them between Moreton and Bribie but only once and apparently that is fairly rare. Edit to add any time from now to late September you should see a fair collection.
  12. My X-Air jumps off the ground full mtow even on a hot day.
  13. Very interesting slant on it. I would hope the the call for help was not classed as an in flight failure.
  14. I certainly remove the upper cowl for first inspection of the day and the lower cowl every 10 hrs or so or if the plane has not been used for a while.
  15. There was a reason that Ian went back to the solid lifter engine and worked from there. If you ask him I am sure he would tell you.
  16. Buy the seat out of an X-Air Hanuman. They are awesome.
  17. My point was it had to be done yesterday or not at all the old instrument expired at midnight last night. they (CASA) knew that 12 months ago and that is how long they have had to get the new one correct.
  18. What was the rush, they have had 12 months to get it right.
  19. Congratulations mate. WoooHoo
  20. I agree Gandalf but the next 36 hours could be interesting.
  21. From the com law website. So with no changes or additions before midnight on Thursday???? 1 Duration This instrument: (a) commences on 1 July 2015; and (b) expires at the end of June 2016, as if it had been repealed by another instrument
  22. Educated and Greens in the same sentence. Thats a novel idea. I must admit that after spending 2 days on the road with Pauline during the January hayrun I was impressed with the real Pauline rather than the one the media would like us to see.
  23. Actually you are quite wrong. She spent quit a bit of time researching aircraft before deciding on the J230 and then purchusing it herself. And yes she may not be the most elequent person around, but she cares about Australia and Australians and to be honest I will take that over some of the university trained knobs that we have in Canberra now. And don't get me started on the union puppets or the greens.
  24. Most of them seem to be common sense which is becoming increasingly less common.
