  1. Guys (and Girls), I am heading towards Emerald and the outskirts of Rocky nest week and have one quicky question.. How much is the weather currently being affected by the Cyclone sitting out near the Coral sea. I am meant to be up there next week running a couple of agricultural feild days and have never visted the 'coastal center' while one of these events is occuring. IE. is it still flyable in VFR. Gibbo
  2. My brothers Piper was painted safety Orange for entire time he was working in PNG, flying himself between mine sites in highlands.. Something about being able to spot it on the jungle floor. :) Gibbo
  3. Skynews just showed 55-1983 overturned at end of strip in SE QLD. Hope the pilots OK. Gibbo
  4. One factor is 'he just moved from the bush'. I do a fair amount of bush flying on private strips and radio calls are not used a fair amount of the time. If he has spent a fair amount of time flying from his own strip out bush he would be very rusty on the radio calls and some adjustment to 'built up' area flying would be required. How many complaints about AG pilots not using radio calls! (maybe on UHF!) Education in this case would resolve the issue. I know quite a few PPL pilots who would struggle in controlled airspace just because they don't have a ongoing practice. ALL their flying is in remote areas. Gibbo
  5. Just wait till the new strip at Olympic dam is built then the fun will start. Feel like being in the circuit with a 747 direct from asia with a 767 from perth following closely behind. Proposed is a 4200m x 35m strip as the old one is going to be a massive hole. Roxby downs pop. 12000 with another 2-3000 imported workers passing thru every couple of weeks. Gibbo
  6. If you want a small motor that will scare your knickers off try the Suzuki 750 Turbo. My Brother still has the 70's beast as a collectors item and boy does it go. The old straight six 1.3 litre was the same till they were banned from Import. The japs have small motors down pat and would love them to enter the aircraft market. Gibbo
  7. It's amazing where you can go IF you do the correct thing. Most controlled airspace is accessable with Prior notice via telephone (and certain timings) BUT it will only take one idiot to stuff it up for all of us. Oakley tower can be brillant if the correct channels are followed and some 'not so common' manners are present. I've had some good experiances but I have also copped some attitude simply because someone in the past did the wrong thing. We need to be very careful of our image as a whole as some of the GA/RPT attitudes towards are not pleasent. A couple of them should have been reported but the effort outweights the results. 'I' as a matter of course will hold at 10 miles whenever a RPT is in the circuit and will always give way to them. $thou per hour vers $80 per hour. . Gibbo
  8. Lovely looking CW (with a very familair logo attached to the wing tips and tail) in the centerfold of this mornings herald-sun. Only missing one important item, what happened the half naked accessory. Looks a bit small against the C-17. Well done Admin, a positive RA news-advert for once. Gibbo
  9. 192 hours in Jab 160's, 14 hours in Jab 170's.. Got my cert in July 08, About to embark on my third self fly 'service' trip around the top end (another 50+ plus hours). Aircraft choice --- J170 ---. May cross over to a 230D if I can get a longterm x-hire. The performance on a soft sand strip in hot weather is 'marginal' when you have afternoon pressure altitudes of 7000'. I have seen 8500' in the southern half of the Tanami. Tough Buggers compared with some on the market. Gibbo
  10. Never pleased with my landings... I still can't improve on my first solo landing at lilydale no matter how much I practice.
  11. Found this following a link in another thread. Old but good. Crosswind T.O. and Land Seems to have some good content.
  12. Going to try and short cut it a bit further by knocking off as much of the Controlled airspace endorsement in a Jab that I can over the next few weeks and that should only leave the IFR part of the PPL which can't be done in a Jab. Biggest bugger is that I will need to wait to get the Controlled airspace endorsement. I Need to check on the finepoint legalities of what I am about to do but should be able to slip it thru but let's see if I pass the medical first. Gibbo
  13. Booked in for my Medical on Monday. Either for the Controlled airspace endorsement or the PPL. Gibbo.
  14. Pervert.. Last time I was there (while waiting for a delayed flight!!!!) I had a tap on the shoulder from Mr Federal Plod. The other end makes for a more interesting time. 747's about 20' as they come over the fence. :) If the cars rocking don't bother knocking as it's just the wind. Gibbo.
  15. I find the heavy transport landing approach great in a cross wind. Half flaps and a very long approach in a Jab 160 @ 67-72kns. I crab it down on the rudder to about 10 feet from the ground. As I transition into line with the runway I keep just enough pressure on the alerons to keep the wing against the wind. A single wheel touchdown transiting to a two wheeler in a fairly firm manner (no stall warning!). I always keep 'some' power on till I am about to touch the wheels down. A nice sharp cherp from the mains is a nice sound on a windy day. I maintain a strong back pressure on the elevator to aid with the breaking and keep the COG over the main wheels. Directional control is maintained thru the rudder or if the x-winds are strong enough reducing pressure on the elevator earlier to help maintain direction control via the front wheel. Remember to keep the wing down at all times. You really need to remember that the center of gravity can move forwards in a hurry if the front wheel has to much weight on it. Learnt my lesson early when I still had an instructor to clean my mess up and do the swearing.
  16. I've had Sandys name mentioned a few times so I should give him a call. ;). I was under the impression that we had to resit the BAK and GPFT, If not life is 'lot' cheaper. Things could be cheaper if I could do the flight test in a GA jab. Gibbo.
  17. I got one of my enginnering friends to make a 'cable' adapter to use the passenger intercom system for the UHF. I can get him to provide a wiring diagram if needed. I simply use the intercom and press an external xmit transmit button on my GME 5w Handheld. Best range was 125k at 5500'. :) Total cost was $15 and the sacrifice of the cable from a crappy headset that was laying around. I've found it very handy when using ag strips on remote properties. GME 701 has an external microphone / speaker jack. 600 series is based on the same design so they should be ok as well. Avoid any of the 0.5 and 1 watt units (cheap uniden and GME) as you will only get 1-2k at the most. Gibbo
  18. Would be great as long as you had a really long runway (2000m) and didn't want to fly jabirus. 40 plus degrees every day except winter when it's -5 at night. Gibbo
  19. Nose wheel steering and rudder are connected and you need the nose pointing directly down the strip before touchdown. Gibbo
  20. As to the reason for the initial engine failure, this months RaAus mag could have the answer. Prop certification and 4 cly engines producing torque vibrations from the firing of the piston. Gibbo PS. Another benefit of Mr Diesels invention of the compression ignition system.
  21. ===== Please note that Tooradin is having a BBQ this Saturday in aid of the bush fire victims ===== Concept that as a group (Raa or just the rec flyers (and the Tooradin flyers ;)) should get together and do over the next few weeks / months.. Now we have passenger insurance (thanks RaAus)! As Tooradin, Lilydale and Latrobe Valley are the closest to the fires we should as a group run some distraction flights for the kids. It may only take their minds off things for a few minutes but it would all help. Brent -> Would Gary be interested in Helping. LFS -> Same deal. I'm happy to scare some poor kid sitting in the passenger seat and will put in for the cost. Gibbo
  22. Not my worst ever, but the worst I could photograph. Got caught between cooper pedy and the NT border. 35kn headwind, 40mile rain detour and a very sore bum after 4 and 1/2 hours on what should ahve been a 2.9 hour flight. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TnxR4AV0VYc/SHCG83_ZzqI/AAAAAAAAABA/DFa8lOXGUOA/s1600-h/Flying+trip+photos+032.jpg Worst was a '178 seconds' type situation between Cobar and Hillston. Exact same situation as the casa training but kept my brains about myself and stood back and made the correct choices. Hole thru the clouds popped open at just the right moment. One DVD = right information at the right time. I have started to investage the 'possible weather' a little more closely before I go flying. Gibbo
  23. All the emergency service's were on standby. The premier, All the media, headlines in the papers and radio were advertising the fact it was going to be the worst day in Victorian history on Friday. We were all told to stay at home, get off the roads, don't travel, check the oldies etc. From what I understand about the fire at Kilmore / Kinglake is that a 'delinquent' dropped a cigarette in the grass and it took off. He had better have the army protecting him! Gibbo
  24. Anybody know the fate of Lilydale and Coldstream airports? If not good, anybody hurt. Heard the fires ran thru the area. Gibbo
