1. You would need to use a blue tooth adapter. Aviation Headset Adapters Clear prop most likely will sell them as well.. Ian???
2. Using a HTC Touch HD2 with a couple of GPS apps loaded.. GPSvp and nonigpsplot. Great phone and excellent coverage. External antennas are possible using a inductive mount. Standard GSM is crap so NextG is the only way to go. Played around using the wireless router last night so I may have a shot at using my Ipod touch for weather etc while flying via the router... It is possible to 'jailbreak' the Ipod Touch (legal now!) so you can use a bluetooth GPS with it and most of the iPhone aviation maps. Next Experiment. Edit: A few people have managed to get Android running as a boot option on the HD2. Rumours around of a couple people running Windows mobile 7 prerelease on it as well.
3. Got the same attitude last year in my rather large circuit. lol WOnder what the CEO would have to say about our circuit lengths.
4. I do have to agree about the safety gear. There is nothing worse than not being able to get out of the way when the wind changes on a windmill. I've been knocked off "once" and it does hurt when you hit the ground... A safety harness would have made it worse as I would have been caught in the spinning blades instead of kicking myself clear and the other guys would have had hell getting me down. Windmills are now basically banned when it comes to the OHS requirements. .. Glad the soil / sand was very soft. 45' to the ground.
5. Thanks for the heads up.. Use them for remote monitoring equipment so this will change all the work that we had to do to get a static Ip address. If they only could have done this about 2 years ago. Giles
6. This should make you shudder then. lol
7. hmm.. No fear of heights only falling. lol. I'm an Ex-windmill mechanic so you do get over it when you spend your days up the top of a NT windmill. I notice than I have no real sense of height until i'm about 300' from the ground and then I am very aware of it. I found the same thing when I had a few goes at skydiving in my youth. I'm yet to try an open cockpit and I suspect that I may be feeling it a little more intensly. Gibbo
8. mmm. Zenith 750 with the following.. damn single prop only rules apply. http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2010/perching-plane-0720.html Wonder how the rules would apply to this.
9. I have managed to get a Garmin airspace map working on my HTC HD2 phone (with rasters at the same time! thanks to GPSVP).. The only thing that I am missing is a vector version of the ERC lows.. Does anyone have a 'open source' version of it laying around.. It's the only thing I am missing.
10. The accuracy I suspect is caused by the resolution of the coordinates.. Four decimal places will only get you to within about 500m. If you have a look at the ERSA points they will always be out by a fraction as they do not provide the accuracy. Some of the IFR GPS plates may be a better soultion if you need some accuracy. Have a look at Melbourne airports coordinates. Gibbo
11. The old girl has been in a few wars and has always come out on top. :) Well done guys. Gibbo
12. This is starting to sound like it's a very wanted project. :) My Navigation planning setup is; Flight plan completed using Kwiknav (freeware). I do want to add the google terrian relief. Route loaded into google earth using a blend of CTA and similar (3d shapes) and all ERSA data (radio etc) loaded into a .gpx waypoint file. Fly the route with a 3d perpective (sp???) If all good loaded into my el cheapo GPS and the route taken is then loaded onto my PC at the end of the trip. This may form the basis of performance anaylis when combined with data history from the EFIS. (another project to be started sometime - Engine REV's - Climbrate - throttle positon based on wire position sensor etc and full nav etc on win7 netbook using serial interface from the EFIS) GPS is currently loaded with Google earth Terrian tiles level 5-12. KwikNAV GPS waypoints with ERSA data (edited from another kml file) running 'donation ver' noniGPSplot v2.80. Map created using NonimapView. Needed to download the two missing .dll files but avialable on website and just need to be copied to the SD card. (these .dll files are handy as I am now able to run some of the Windows Mobile 5.0 programs on the GPS) I am currently downloading the tiles to level 14 for 10NM around all for all the ERSA listings. Nonimapview automatically calibrates the map tiles (tiles need to be moved about 68m). I do wish to somehow add a image of the airstrips to the level 14 tiles. Maybe able to use the ERSA layouts or overlay google sat image for that tile (?? PDF import onto tile using photoshop but do have kml drawings for most strips already) This may take a while! Each initial map read (on configuration) takes about 12 hours but no noticable slowdown while working on a day to day basis. I am planning to stich the tiles back together so I can overlay the CTA zones onto the actual map. The CTA KML file I have has them drawn as polygons and I have been having hell trying to figure out how to print them onto the maps without spending anything on software. I think Ozi can do it but don't want to spend the bucks.. If anyone has a .shp file for the CTA etc zones can you please let me know? I will create a Torrent in about a weeks time when I have completed the next set of modifications. You will need to make a $14 donation to NoniGps via paypal to get the navigation side of the program working (needed). Great little program with heaps of handy features hidden away. Just for the record. This data is being used for education purposes only.. I am happy to share this data as part of an educational exercise in creating a GPS map set. There are creative commons copyright claims to some of the data. All maps will remain the copyright of Google.
13. Hmmm.. That had a new motor not long ago.. about the time I killed 5228.. lol That area is covered in private strips and some are a little more elabirate that what you would find on the east coast.. Rice mills make reallt good hangers and workshops. Gibbo
14. Anybody know the rego? I've had a similair problem last year in one of them.... Varying Oil pressure, High temps, rough running and fuel consumption around 26lph. ECG on the right hand side was at least 20 degrees hotter. Great fun 100 nm from the nearest strip crossing the Barkley. thumb_down
15. I have made a terrian map from google earth* (Calibrated correctly < 1m) and am slowly adding the WAC and VNC details that are required. (just over 1.5 gb - 4500 map tiles and all of oz from zoom 5 to zoom 12. If you send me a PM I will burn you a SD image onto a DVD ROM. (1700 strips and all CTA, Danger and Prohibated areas loaded - current as of last ERSA). I will have the elevation data loaded in the next week or so. Using a cheap 7" ebay special with NoniGPSplot. Crap in the direct sun but suitable for lap work. Gibbo * Allowed under the licence as not for profit.
16. You need a Maltesse sister in law. lol Very nice tucker. Thousands survived on them back in the thirtys. Recipes - Border Range Fresh Farmed Rabbit Gibbo
17. Australian airspace and airstrip data in kml format. Seems fairly up to date but missing most of the class D airspace. Welt2000 German website but translates well with google toolbar.
18. Flown a few Jabs and most of them had really bad brakes.. It would appear that the cause (in a lot of case's) was that the protective lining had been left on the rotor at installation. I was informed of this in Bundy last year while getting a x-hire serviced. The only way to remove it was to softly bead blast the rotor. The protective coating is clear and when heated changes the surface friction on the rotor hence the crap brakes. Maybe worth having a look at.
19. Closest call I've had was about 95nm out of Roma taking off from a unmarked farm strip (bloody hard to spot from the air!) and had a f-18 pass over the top of me no more than 300-400' above me as I left the ground. Nothing like the smell of Avtur early in the morning. I Did get a radio call afterwards and we both had a chuckle after the bumps from the downwash. Worst sight I have seen was on Lower Dandenong Rd and had the displeasure of seeing two c-15? or C-17? ducking and weaving trying to spot each other on short final at Morrabin. There was no more than 50' between them. Oct 09 i_dunno
20. I have been playing for the past week or so with a Chinese 7" no name GPS that runs win CE 5.0. Unit is unlocked ex factory so that makes the job really easy. I have had success with pocketFMS and about 8 other packages. I am going to load a trail of ozi tonight and I will most likely settle on this package due to the mapping support. Cost including the maps will actually be cheaper than pocketFMS. (over $500 oz plus ongoing updates!) In regards to the copyright issue there was an interesting case last year that sensis lost about the actual ownership / copyright of the data. It turned out that the actual layout was the only part of the phonebook that they could copyright. There is now nothing legally stopping us from collating the ERSA data into a digital database (with the additional records) as the data belongs in the public forum. There are several PDF readers written for WinCE that actually work. Have a look under winCE freeware...... Gibbo
21. Ask Telstra about the mess it can make of someone's bill. Had a couple of doubled / tripled up calls made at the exact same time.. One in Queensland and one in SA. The billing system could not cope with the concept and it took them 3 months to sort it out. I use a 6db car antenna attached to my samsung phone and you can get reception everywhere in Australia as soon as you hit 3000'. Middle of the Simpson and Gibson Deserts is not a problem (except to Tel$tra's billing engine). G
22. Found this little critter.. Noni GPSPlot Freeware with donation. Forum has hundreds of instances of automotive GPS adaptions. Has the abilty to import Google earth and 'other maps'. Also able to import CSV files for points. Gibbo
23. LOL... So no doubt you heard my crappy radio calls as I warmed up... The day was just to nice not to go flying. Runway markings.. Taxi way markings whats next, a RPT service other than the choppers..... G
24. The place is now 'flasher than Micheal Jackson'... Huge improvement... Took 4586 for a spin the other week and it's brillant. I was starting to get a bit concerned about the state of things but they have turned it around completely. Gibbo
25. As your based in Geelong.. speak to Manny at Inbound Aviation in Ballarat. I'm sure he will give you the best option out that side of town. Manny has some good GA contacts and knows the in and outs of the local schools. Agree about Lilydale. When I finally get paid (hello - client!!!!) I will be spending some of my hard earned $ there. G
