  3. I suspect that 6% is a bit high but it depends on the aircraft and cruise altitude. The graph below plots the data from the J160 POH. It shows the time to climb for a MTOW of 440kg and 540 kg at both a standard day (15 degrees on the ground) and a +20 degree day(35 degrees on the ground). The extra temperature and the extra weight doubles the time to climb to 8000 feet. The data in the POH docent go higher than 8000 feet but is is reasonably obvious that the temp and the extra weight will have an even greater affect above 8000 feet.

  6. The other factor to consider is temprature. At MTOW on a hot day you might not climb all that fast. Say on a colder day you can climb at 500' per mimute average ( low down you may be faster) to 8000. That climb takes 16 minutes. If in the hot afternoon that drops off to 200' that will take you 40 minutes. If you use 30l per hour to climb and 15l per hour in cruise the extra 24 minute is 6 liters or enough for nearly half an hours cruise. This is why departing early is a good move and minimizing the useless stuff in the aircraft to minimize weight.

  11. The recent posts in this thread kinda prove my point that pilots generally (both GA and raAus) have a poor understanding of the rules. They seem to rely on what someone else told them rather than what the rules actually say. We have people who think that some restricted areas are ok for raaus pilots. Others that think a cpl needs to to time at night. Next it will be red ones fly faster and and drop bears falling from the sky.
  12. I don't know why people are paying money for the english language assessment. If you are an "expert speaker" you just need the form signed by an appropriate testing officer. I was chatting to the CFI where I was training and asked what I had to do to pass the exam. he said you just did and signed my form there and then.
  13. If someone asks "What's the speed limit on the freeway?" Do you respond 110 or give a long discussion about how some times with very heavy rain you can only drive at 40? You need to make the distinction between what is "Safe" and what is "legal". They are often two different things. Too often in aviation someone asks what is" legal". A person answers with what they have been taught is "safe". This then gets interpreted as the legal position by the first person and before you know it there are new phantom imaginary rules passing from folklore into accepted procedures.
  14. I think that if an instructor/ senior pilot is asked the legal requirement for something they should be able to say it and not some higher conservative standard. They can then go in to discuss why in some circumstances that isn't necessarily safe. I find many people over state the laws on the safe side. That is fine. It is safer and not illegal. But it is also important that people understand that this isn't the rule. Someone the other day tried to tell me that 2000 feet was the minimum height you are allowed to fly because that is what their instructor told them. They were a bit shocked when I showed them the real rule.

  18. Actually this argument is used quite a lot on the roads. Have you tried riding a bicycle across the traffic lanes of the harbour bridge, or through a tunnel? Or on many freeways?

Head in the clouds, I agree with you statement above though I think that some of the issues you raise are not that difficult(though others are) Just thinking about a 24 reg LSA, It could be registered VH without technical changes and so there is some argument that it would be safe in controlled airspace, provided that they have a transponder. For some aircraft this wont be an issue. For a one off home build with no electrical system and a time expired 2-stroke then...
  20. Reflecting on this a bit more I suspect that the better option is to go the other way. If 2 things could happen a lot of the discussion above would be resolved: 1.CASA fixed their drivers license medical so that it is what it was supposed to be. Ie if you can drive a car without restriction you can fly without restriction. 2.RAAus lets a person who holds an RPL fly an RAAus aircraft without needing to have a RPC. This way those that wanted it could have one license that would allow them access to controlled airspace without needing to have 2.
  21. I don't think that pushing SAAA to change its role is the way to go. SAAA is primarily about supporting home builders to build, maintain and fly their home built aircraft. If it becomes the RAAus of the 600kg to 1500kg range then it likely will lose the focus it has on builders.
  22. Have a look again. The rate you have quoted is for a regional airliner. The GA rate is the next column over. The rate is $60 for the landing and then $132 for the parking, though is is not much more than parking a car there. During the curfew small aircraft are still allowed to use Sydney and so getting a landing at that time is possible however at other times it isnt that easy. You also have to pay the airservices terminal charges which they may waive for occasional use.

No pictures of the failures but does suggest that replacement with an AN5 bolt eliminates the need for the 2000 (edited: was 200 thanks OME) hour replacement but note the caution about drilling out. http://jabiru.net.au/images/JSB037-1_Wing_attachment_bolts.pdf
  25. OME, Given that Jabiru (and CASA) are suggesting that the bolts are OK for 2000 hours it is fair to say that the issue is one of either fatigue or corrosion. In general higher strength bolts do not have higher fatigue performance because the fatigue performance is largely a function of surface smoothness. While Having a higher strength bolt will not do any harm it is unlikely to have a significantly longer service life so they probably should be replaced at the same 2000 hour interval.
