Tailwheel I've always been interested in the the tailwheelers & have flown a few hours (only about 20) on a few types including a nice Chipmunk. They certainly make you a better pilot. Lately I've been thinking about getting checked out on a Lightwing but not sure if I'd do enough hours to be as confident as I usually am in a Jabiru. Always nice to see these machines around the place however. Rgds

Coffs RAAus G'day all I was at the Airshow up at Coffs on the weekend. The Coffs Harbour aero club have just bought a J170 which I believe is $170 per hour with instructor. I think membership was only $30-40 dollars or so - don't quote me on that though. They also have a PA28 for hire. One other issue to check with them would be what their arrangements are for training purely RAAus students prior to the RAAus CTA endorsement coming into effect. Cheers

Hey Motz, with reference to the other thread thats running re GA BFR's in RAA registered aircraft, would you know if your school has instructors that are capable of signing off both GA and RAAus flight reviews? Rgds

Jabster hire Hey Coxy, Dave's flying school at The Oaks has 3 Jabiru LSAs. P/hire is $110 per hour. One aircraft goes to YWOL each friday/saturday leaving 2 aircraft avail. I've been told that a J230 should be coming online soon. I believe there are also 2 J160s (RAAus rego) at Camde. Not sure of prices. Rgdz..............

Why the J230 I guess for me having flown the smaller LSA and J160 and wanting access to something for longer trips - eg Temora, Birdsville, camping down the coast etc the J230 seems a natural progression from the smaller birds in the fleet. As someone that hires rather than owns aeroplanes, for me the Jabs are probably the most commonly available, and I'm happy to support something manufactured (airframe and engine) in Oz.

I had a look at the "Flying Around" section of the Airservices website for Canberra. Apart from a brief mention of the "Barton Training Areas" there was no mention of other training or Danger areas (apart from D423 out towards Braidwood - Military Helo training area). I couldn't find any further info on "Barton Training Areas" elsewhere - eg ERSA etc. Whether it is over the suburb of Barton or is just the name they use I'm not sure.... I've often wondered how you find out about training areas if you are not a local. A while ago I went flying at Albion Park (not my local airfield) with a pilot friend from work. He talked about the "training area" however I don't ever recall seeing anything on a chart around YWOL.... Cheers

Not sure if its the same as the electronic version of the VFG on the CD recently received, but my printed version of the VFG (Version 2, July 2007) has a min height required of 1000ft above built up areas on pp 29/30. Cheers

You don't need the prefix numbers (55, 24 etc.) in the rego, just the 4 digits. For aircraft type use ULAC and as you've suggested use the remarks field for callsign. Thanks Matt thats great. I've just looked at the Aircraft type designators through the Airservices website and "ULAC" is an approved ICAO special type designator... Cheers

Folks, just wondering if anyone can assist on info on filing flightplans through NAIPS for flights in RAAus registered aircraft. I've used the system many times before for GA registered aicraft etc, however I'm unsure of what rego to input for RAAus registered aircraft. Eg for aircraft 55-9999 would you input 559999 or 9999 in the rego field? My thinking is that you would input 559999 into the rego field and then in field 18 you input /rmk callsign jabiru9999 etc, but I'm not sure if this is correct. I've looked in the AIP, RAAus & Airservices websites etc but can't see anything. Can anyone assist?

An interesting situation occurred yesterday afternoon at The Oaks. A horse got loose on the airfield. At the time there were two in the circuit and a Foxbat just taxiing out. The Foxbat shutdown and the Jabirus circled for a while until the owner caught up with the getaway at the southern end of the field. Definitely something you don't see everyday!

Many good posts above that indicate its really a personal decision. You need to weigh it up for yourself and decide whether or not to go for it. It does seem at the moment that the time is right for someone who wants to make flying their career. Working in operations in a major Aust Airline however, I see many pilots that see their job as verrrrry mundane.......... And one piece of advice that I was given from someone at the Sydney Aerobatic School that I'll always remember is "don't stuff up a good hobby by trying to turn it into a career"............

Unfortunately I can't make it this year as I'm working. However I did get to the last airshow held there and thought it was very well run/organised etc. A very pleasant day out.

For my test we didn't need to simulate the low cloud as it was there! Canberra to Cowra at low level 4-500' most of the way, land and replan to another destination. That turned out to be wombeyan caves for a supposed 'photo shoot'. Hard to find a hole in the ground when you are buzzing along in a Mooney at 500'. Luckily I used a lead in feature/road to follow to the final 'target'. After that the plan was to return to Canberra. Half way there I announced I would be diverting to Goulburn as vis/ceiling was below minimums & I knew goulburn was clear. Instructor said good decision but then said to continue to planned destination, advising me to slow up/put out some flap etc. We landed in a heavy shower & the runway was soaked, and would be the worst conditions I have flown in. Passing that test was the sweetest thing................

A handshake and a set of aeroclub wings once I had finished my CPL test. This was after having to push the aircraft into the hangar in a downpour (& through the mud) on my own. (The instructor & the guy checking him asked me to drop them both off in front of the aeroclub on the tarmac before I had to put the aircraft away).

G'day all, a bit about myself... Learnt to fly (GA) approx 20years ago in Canberra. Got my CPL with the Canberra Aero Club. At that stage it was the middle of the 'recession we had to have". I then decided to continue working in Airline Operations roles instead of attempting to follow the airline pilot career path. Always kept interested in recreational flying however. I obtained my pilot certificate a few years ago now on Jabirus & fly in the Sydney area. I also fly some GA when I can although this seems to be becoming more and more unaffordable for me, particularly with a young family/mortage etc. Looking forward to meeting any members that might be in the Sydney area.
