  1. Funny thing I can use a mower that has stood for 6 months and it starts straight away, but the fuel is probably 9 months old. Same goes for chain saws and whipper snippers. I have had problems with poor quality fuel in the Corby, near new and caused detonation, that was Caltex Super. I have started engines that have been boxed for 9 years with fuel in the tanks, but it was not a certainty.
  2. Skippy I agree with you that raising the undercarriage would not change the drag while you are flying, but I think you are looking at a sea plane and the drag would be excessive with the wheels down on the water.
  3. After flying the old Victa out of Whyalla in Summer I realised how badly they performed and eventually I believe they were grounded if MSL temp exceeded 30 deg C. I still have a soft spot for the old plane.
  4. SplitS. I read what you are saying as that turning off one mag resulted in roughness and high EGT, but I don't understand that you say both mags behaved the same. Are you saying that if you cut the right mag off, you get rough running and high EGT and exactly the same if you cut only the left mag off? That means that the smooth running needs both mags to be fully operational. Is that what you were saying?
  5. Is the question "Why is less manifold pressure required? is really not a question at all. There is less pressure available. I still fail to see how an engine can run the same power at the same rpm and also fuel flow at greatly varying pressures. Can someone really explain it?
  6. A GA BFR is accepted by RAAus and that is what I use, but unless I have an RAAus pilot certificate and am also a subscriber to RAAus I cannot fly an RAAus reg plane. RAAus also recognise a valid GA medical. What I want to know is how RAAus will allow a GA pilot to fly their rego planes without having a pilot certificate and also being a subscriber? Notice I don't use the word member as we are not really members at all. I cannot see RAAUs changing their rules to let people fly their aircraft without getting a rake off. Talking to someone today who is far more knowledgable than me I hear that CASA has told ELAAA, who were hoping to provide competition to RAAus that more or less their was no hope of them succeeding and also that RAAus were not doing much better. That person considers CASA has no idea what it is trying to achieve and even less of ever achieving anything good.
  7. Put all your trust in an instrument would you? Do they need electricity to make them work? Do they need calibrating? Do they distract you from looking out? Even if they are perfect and never fail you can quickly go from near max lift to zero lift in hilly country at low level. I haven't had a stall warning in any of my planes this century and I manage to get by, but I don't try to push the boundaries.
  8. Is that chart showing horsepower or percentage of horsepower. I cannot understand that the engine is shown as 100hp at SL, 2400rpm and 19.3MP and also 100hp at 15000' same rpm but 16.3MP. That is lower MP and other things except air density being the same, including fuel flow.
  9. What I was asking for was for someone here to come up with the requirements, instead of whingeing about the problems with CASA and RAAus. How do we get to fly GA and RAAus aircraft with less bull. How should the legislation be worded to allow someone to fly both aircraft types. I know it will not happen because RAAus is a money making organisation and would not allow GA pilots to fly their aircraft without them getting a financial rake off.
  10. I would like to see someone come up with a way to control aircraft, including register them. Also a way to work out the legislation to enable a person who gives money to RAAus can fly an aircraft that is not GA rego. Also a way to enable GA pilot to fly an aircraft controlled by RAAus. So far people are calling for a means to tly RAAus reg aircraft without them being RAAus rego and also a way to fly cheaply. Lets ahve a look at what sort of legislation would accomplish their desires. Personally I would like to be able to fly any aircraft on my PPL. Plus have my RAAus reg plane on the GA register.
  11. The trailerable plane does not live up to the idea of a flying car. To be usefull a flying car must be able to get to the airport and fly to a destination, then get from the destination airport, to wherever yo finally want to go. Plus do the return trip. The trailerable aircraft will leave you at Proserpine or Thangool, looking for a taxi to get somewhere els, because who the hell wants to go to Proserpine or Thangool airport? Considering the advancements in aircraft design, since the Bleriot and Wrights time, we should be able to design a flying car that will fly and drive well. It should not be hard to get anything to drive better than a Land Rover or Ford Falcon.
  12. If all aircraft were looked after by CASA, there would be no need for anyone to belong to RAAus, because the requirement to have a certificate to fly the plane would be gone. We could all fly with no rego fees and no annual membership fee. But and it is a big but, we would all have to hold a CASA issued licence. Is that not the reason recreational flying started. To get away from the red tape of licences and the medical requirements. We sound like those overseas immigrants that came here because Australia was better than where we came from. Then we want to change it so that it is like home. If you don't like RAAus, go fly GA, there is nothing stopping you, except maybe that it will cost too much to meet the standards required.
  13. Are you saying it was a mechanical failure turbs, because that is how I read it. At 600' I would not think you need to avoid cattle, even emus can stand a two stroke at that height.
  14. I see today on Avweb that there is a new flying car, The Klein air car. A bit of a video and it is a good looking machine. Was doing circuits and apart from the great amount of back stick to rotate, it looked just like any normal aircraft. The comments after the article were interesting. People thought it would attract massive insurance premiums, which I can understand after seeing posts about insurance here today. Repairs were also considered a problem as a car repairer would not e able to do them. The usefulness of an air car was also questioned, there will neve be as amny as manufacturers would like and also the registration rules would require lights etc and certification for the road, unless production numbers were very low. It certainly looked good in the video.
  15. Last year 25, this year 13. Less hours is hardly affected by the pandemic, I just have one less aircraft to fly..
  16. Would the airstrip have been government owned years ago and vested with the local government, supposedly for aviation use, but that has all been ignored by government. Too hard to think about it and anyway someone is making a buck so government is happy.
  17. Interesting. I have no idea what would happen with a broken cable. No doubt the chopper would accelerate like mad, maybe the cable could spring back towards the chopper, but a weak link near the chopper would control that. I notice that the chopper is turning away from the pull direction, probably to se where to go. Just have to kep that tail rotor safe.
  18. I don't know what your E9 is, but hopefully it is very fast if you can hear it 15km away. Full throttle is not necessarily noisy, try running full throttle at low rpm and you will hear a difference. I can run my Jab engined plane at full throttle with its short straight through pipes and am told it is very quiet. My O-360 powered RV4 was quite noisy, but it wasn't in the area for very long.
  19. All the self righteous rage about the Qatar airport episode. Nobody has come out and saud what the Qatari authorities should have done. I wonder what would have happened if the same thing happened at Sydney airport. My immediate thought was that all the possible women should have been asked to provide a sample of their DNA. That would have enabled a yes or no to parentage even though the person would be out of the country by the time parentage was established.
  20. The most annoying noises I hear are slow moving helicopters and the even worse motorbikes. For the power used the motorbike is horrendously noisy. A 600hp truck can pass my place but I will not usually hear it, but motorbikes seem to always be apparent and even worse is the young lad with a two stroke who can't get above 2nd gear.
  21. I am thinking of hanging up the headset. I reckon 85 years old is good enough for me. That means I will have my Corby to go to a good home sometime soon. Haven't thought about price.
  22. Is it really defence force personnel outlook causing the problem? It could be just bureaucrats, people who make rules and cannot believe they are stupid. When queried they fall back on the old position of I am in charge, I know what is best, I will not change. All they want is control.
  23. in my local area the fog is there at dawn and then lifts completely. A local CFI decided to take off with a student for a trip to Bundaberg as soon as it stared clearing. Away he goes, but it doesn't clear, his point of departure is covered in fog again as soon as he took off. No worries, carry on to Bundy, but it doesn't clear and he is flying over a fog bank, with a low cloud layer above. Luckily he hears radio chatter from the coast near Bundy and they tell him it is clear there, so no problems. Except that it was poor judgmnt and luck that carried the day.
  24. Skippy. I sympathise with you, even after explaining what you want, none of us has given an answer. You will just have to live with it. I have C/S endorsement, but haven't used one for years although I did fly an RV10 as a passenger and found it really great to use. My experience with suppliers is that they are very hard to track down and get answers from.
  25. Does anyone really believe that US fighter pilots are somewhere above pimply faced geeks when it comes to killing people. If they believe what their bosses tell them, they will have no remorse about killing unarmed civilians. There military does not have a very good record of acting compassionately or even ethicly.
