  1. I liked the 747, but the most comfortable trip I did to the UK and back had Airbus a380 between Singapore and London. I got seats right at the front, next to the stairs. Very comfortable.
  2. If MSL pressure is 1028 you will read 0 feet at sea level if 1028 is set on your altimeter. If you have set 1026 on your altimeter or to put it another way, you have told it MSL is 1026, it is going to read minus 60 feet at sea level because it is 2 hPa higher then you have set.
  3. I was told that I had an interesting life so I have written a small book for the family. About my side of the family and my own life. All ready to get printed and I will soon see what sort of reception it gets. After writing it I realised that I had left out big lumps of info, which I had really deemed to be un interesting. Things like hanging off the end of a rope, cutting tree limbs off while held on a crane over a house. All forbidden now by workplace health and safety.
  4. Bushwalking, that gets me to out of the way places with a good group of people. I used to do a lot of photography and sailing and of course I helpout in the garden and used to be in the rare fruits group. What are you growing Sue? Jackfruit? Mangosteen? Lychee? Longan?
  5. The pensioners got the most for least effort. Money thrown at them in an effort to get them to spend, while suggesting it would be safer to stay at home.
  6. Could somebody expand on the Otto and Diesel cycles that are being spoken of here. I was under the impression that a diesel engine could run on the Otto cycle principle, but I know little about theory, having only been a mechanic back in the fifties.
  7. Hand washing could be better explained. THe real reason for it is to stop us carrying the virus from what we touch, to our mouth or eyes. It would be better to say don't touch your face with your hands, As far as other countries go China is outstanding, they have hardly any cases per million head of population. Better than us in fact.
  8. How many die each year from the usual flu that goes around, I know the figure is not high, but it is not negligible either, So far we are getting less flue cases, because of the social distancing. The USA is the worst country in the world as far as cases per head of population go, except for places like Andorra and Vatican City, which have tiny populations. We don't have to look far to see why the USA is such a sad case. The health experts, State Governors and President are all pulling in different directions. The UK is not far different.
  9. I used to have Todays Pilot on subscription, but they were taken over by Pilot and eventually I stopped my subscription. They have some very good articles by good writers, but they also have a load of stuff I was not interested in.
  10. I had one of those magic Dynon setups demonstrated to me by a friend who also had it set up to fly the plane. He was demonstrating how it could turn by changing the heading setting and sure enough it went into a turn, all very nice, but he was watching the Dynon and the compass, while I was watching us turning into a nice big cumulous cloud. My warning was what stopped us going IFR. No doubt it would have continued and stabilised on a new heading, but it needs care in use.
  11. I wanted to get fuel consumption down from 150% of what it was originally to a reasonable figure. It still works OK and temps are good. Maybe I should have changed the needle jet, rather than the main jet.
  12. I have a switch to completely isolate the battery. That stops any fire problems, or leak down problems. The same as mentioned above I think. I installed the same switch on the RV4 I built and was always amazed how the majority of Rvs using a solenoid operated master switch, which needs power to it even when the master is off.
  13. I have an old Bing carby. It started using excess fuel and giving black plugs. I fiddled with it and eventually sent it to Jabiru. They did an overhaul of it. It still uses more fuel than it should and it starts best with plenty of throttle. Runs pretty well, better than before. I have changed main jet down 1 size and hardly any difference. I am not really happy with it and keep intending to do more work on it. I have my doubts about sticking with Bing, maybe it would be better to change to the injector supplied by Sonex aircraft. The only thing stopping me is the change of controls required, but I am thinking about it. Bing spares cost excessive dollars in my opinion.
  14. That just shows what a helping hand is available from Airservices and other pilots. In this case flydoc. great work.
  15. It can be hard to resist an intersection take off. ATC at Townsville got a bit pissed off with me when I insisted on the full runway for TO in a Piper Cherokee., but having had a failure at TO I will not cut it short.
  16. I am not the least surprised. I have heard many tales from Aussie pilots about working for Asian airlines. The problem is not restricted to third world countries. There have been cases of incompetence with US and also Air France airlines. I have flown with Thai several times and will never do so again after experiencing poor pilotage going into Madrid. As far as small Asian airlines go, least said soonest mended.
  17. Whistle blowers at Boeing have pointed out this same problem with the fuselage former rings which had to be manually altered to make them fit. In my last few years at work I was very unhappy with quality assurance. it seemed to be a case of tick the box whatever and just hope that the piece was OK.
  18. I think you will find Yaesu is different from Icom. I have both and the Icom is two plugs into the radio, while the Icom is one double plug.
  19. There are a lot of VW based engines flying. The good ones are those that don't offer 100hp, but are providing a reliable engine for light aircraft such as the Corby Starlet. One step up from them is the Jabiru, Three steps up, at least coastwise is the Rotax.
  20. I don't think you would be able to fly a taildragger RAAus aircraft without a taildragger RAAus endorssment even if you had a GA AFR on a nose dragger and no tailwheel endorsement for GA aircraft> I could be wrong, but if I am, then RAAus has got it all wrong safety wise. It may be legal to fly using a GA AFR, but an AFR gained in a Bonanza for example would not make you competent to fly a drifter and I would not try to fly a drifter without some help from an instructor even though I have plenty of tailwheel experience and also Thruster time.
  21. Welcome Hunsta The Jabiru is a good plane but don't fall ito the common trap of thinking it is LSA. It can be LSA or it can be GA or RAAus rego. LSA is not what it seems, it is a plane that has been designed to strict requirements and wether built by a manufacturing company or by an individual, it cannot be altered in any way from the original approved design. The same plane can be registered with RAAus and it can be altered, or it can be registered GA, ie with a VH-XXX registration, when it can be altered to some extent. Funny thing I have flown over Gympie several times, but never landed there. Do they still do gliding there?
  22. I have had a BFR accepted even though the MTOW was above 150lbs. You still have to have an RAAus pilots certificate and be a member of RAAus to fly an RAAQus reg plane. The medical and BFR from GA will suffice for medical and BFR for RAAus.
  23. The higher forces on the con rod are a very small part of the problem of low octane fuel pre-igniting. The biggest effect will be felt on the piston crown and even more so on the ring lands. Low octane fuel works well at wide open throttle if the fuel is injected under pressure at the correct timing before TDC.
  24. I used kero powered tractors for years and they were a pain to operate. the only reason was hat petrol was in short supply so could only be used for starting. They were down on power and would tend to oil up the plugs badly. One tractor was run with the HT leads cut and a button connected to the middle. That gave a gap in the lead and it used to stop the plugs oiling up. Those plugs could be dismantled for cleaning and if you look at an old Fordson tractor you will see in the radiator cowl there is a hexagonal hole to put the end of the plug in and hold it so you can unscrew the sleeve around the ceramic insulator.
