Do they really think we are that silly for crying out loud? Sounds like the same excuse from the resignation that came last year! If you cant say it for what it is, just do the usual "We wish him well in the future". Scotty

EOI for a Welding course
Bubbleboy replied to Bubbleboy's topic in Aircraft Building and Design Discussion
The latest information filtering in as follows: Due to time constraints at the college, the course has been delegated to a Saturday and Sunday. We have dates to be confirmed Monday but are looking at November 2nd & 3rd. It will be held at the Canberra Institute of Technology. The maximum number of students is 12. At present we have 9 from various States interested. Each student will have the use of a TIG machine and tools. You will be required to provide your own welding helmet, jacket and gloves. I have just purchased each of these items from Ebay for a total of approx $130. The course has been designed for us and is aimed at TIG welding 4130 Chrome Moly and hoping to touch on Aluminum on the second day. As part of the course fee, I will post each student a copy of the EAA TIG welding DVD to watch before attending. This DVD is a fantastic introduction to TIG welding 4130. We have structured the course so we are not wasting time doing a whole lot of theory when we should be hands on welding. By watching this DVD prior it covers a lot of what you will need to know regarding the theory. To make it as easy as possible for all, we are looking at organising sandwich platters for lunch from Subway both days. The cost of these will be incorporated in the course fee. If we have 10 people, the cost is going to be around $450 each. If we get 12 students it will be slightly cheaper. We are not looking at making any profit what so ever so anything left over can be refunded equally after the course. There will be some sort of attainment certificate issued afterwards which may help when the final inspection of your project comes around. My friend on the ground in Canberra is doing a great job organising with the instructors at the college and is looking in to a Motel who can offer us a deal for a few nights. The Motel will be extra. What we will require is your $450 payment to be made by the end of July. This will be nonrefundable unless the course is cancelled. If payment is not received by end of July, your spot on the course will be made available to others. This gives everyone over 2 months to organise the funds. Tax time is just around the corner so you might have a little return to spend! If you think you need to make a payment plan that is fine but let me know. I will issue each person who pays with a receipt. If you intend on flying in to Canberra, as an indication, I looked at Tamworth to Canberra return and it is $400. Book airfares early to get the best rates! For those who have expressed an interest I will be in contact over the coming weeks. Anyone else who is keen please contact me soon as we have 3 spots left at the moment. The instructors have requested we get each student to give me a brief outline of what welding experience they have if any. That way they can tailor the course for every ones wants. I have next to no experience so dont be shy! Scotty -

Hi Darren..yes of course! Welcome aboard! Your number nine so we only have three spots left. At this stage we have a number of people from different States attending. We are in the midst of finalising dates so as soon as we know, you will too! Scotty -
Hi Nev...are you talking about making a repair or welding a whole fuselage? Im no expert on this so correct me anyone but if you build it yourself you dont need to be certified but depending on your skill level, it will dictate the test period etc. Obviously im talking experimental here. If its a repair to an existing certified aircraft I would imagine you would need to be CASA certified. Its a detailed process from what I have heard. Something like having to send in test welds for checking. Im sure we would have an airframe welder on here somewhere who can clarify. Scotty

Hi Phil..yes it is! Its going to be hard to settle on a date to suit everyone. The college needs it to be in a holiday period as the course has been designed for us and is not a part of their regular offerings. I dont want to make it any earlier as the airfares will be too pricey. We are going to have to lock it in soon so we can sort airfares. We have a couple of folk who have expressed interest from around the country so need to allow for travel. Scotty -

OK..had confirmation from the provider. There will be 12 Welding machines and tools available so everyone would have a machine so your not standing around watching others. It will be very hands on. If any one is keen we suggest you obtain the TIG welding DVD from the EAA. This is a great learning tool and you will get a lot out of it and will serve well as an introduction before we attend the course. We want 10 attendees to make it cost effective at $500 a person. We can take 12 which will make it slightly cheaper for everyone. No one is making any money on this by organising it. We are passing on the exact cost as quoted to us. We are also looking at getting a deal at a Motel close to the Airport and provider. If you book your tickets early enough it may be worth flying in to Canberra. We have 6 people from around the country keen at this stage. Scotty -

Hiya Gnu...yes I proposed that also but with 3 days, its going to be too rushed. In saying that, if they have the gear there we may be able to sort something. Scotty -

Hiya Phil...no problems. We need at least 10 starters to make it cost effective so if you know of anyone else who may benefit, let them and me know. We are up to 6 as of now. Scotty -

Ok...information is coming through from the provider. We are looking at a 3 day course. Fri - Sun. The total cost to provide the course is $4950. Max number is 12 students. Will be concentrating on TIG welding 4130 chrome moly from basics upwards. They provide materials but each student needs to provide personal protective gear. The trainer has asked that each student give a brief insight in to their experience so the course can be tailored so each student gets the most out of it for their personal level. We would like to have at least 10 students so the cost would be around $500 each. If we get the 12 it will be slightly less per student. We currently have six interested. As most will be from out of town, we are going to try and obtain a special package with a Motel close by. Apparently the college is close to Canberra airport. To allow people to obtain the cheapest airfares we would like to look at running the course late September early October. What are folks thoughts now we have this information? I know I made inquiries here in Tamworth and to do a very basic arc and MIG welding course at the TAFE, I was looking at $800 and it being spread over several weeks. What we are aiming to provide is a 3 day block focusing on TIG welding chrome moly 4130 metal which is the basis for what we use when building aircraft parts. Scotty -

No problem Gnu...will keep you all informed when we hear back from the provider. We will then have an idea of the costs etc. Scotty -
Hiya Lyle...yes they have some amazing aircraft over there. Andrew Carter is trying to create something similar here with www.tavas.com.au I have just ordered the drawings from Jim Kiger in the USA for the Sopwith Camel. I could build one of the Airdrome kits but I like the idea of being as close to original as possible. Although I couldnt afford the rotary engine, I would use one of the 9 cylinder Rotecs. How dam sexy is this!......is it wrong of me to have dirty dreams about one of these? Scotty

Hiya John...its the first time I have been to this one. I felt it was far better than Warbirds over Wanaka which I attended in 2000 and 2002. Maybe its changed since then. The museum is world class. I believe Peter Jackson threw some ridiculous amount at it and the figure which is being tossed around is around $50 million. It is just outstanding! Even if WW1 aircraft dont interest you it is well worth going to once. Im going back in 2 years with the wife this time. Im sure she will enjoy the wine tent... The Camera is a Nikon. To be honest I bought a Laptop from Harvey Norman and they gave it to me. Im a numpty when it comes to photography. I put it on auto and press the button. That is it. I might learn what all the other buttons do one day but I have a plane to build which is more important ... Scotty
