    My apologies. I hadn't realised the issues that Jabiru were facing with CASA. I was mainly curious about the reputation as I'd heard of the few engine problems (which could be at the same rate as rotax, just that it depends on how and whether issues are reported!) but also read that Jabiru are one of the stronger aircraft with regards to the body and go,through thorough stress testing. Feel free to delete the thread. I'd rather not fan the flames through this if there's a bit of a witch hunt going on!

    I've no experience of them but I have heard of a few issues with the 2200 engine. The title of this thread was something I heard last week at the airfield from a chap offering advice on a first aircraft purchase (not to me, to another chap!). I had hoped to ask him what was so bad/ what his experience was but he'd buggered off by the time I'd finished my lesson. So I was just wondering if they did have a bad rep beyond the known engine issues? Personally I think they look quite good as an affordable first purchase!

    My old rugby club was subject to constant noise complaints by local residents (very nice and expensive area). The club was founded in 1875 and had played at the same ground since then, so similar to idiots complaining about noise after buying a home next to an airport. Sadly it had to relocate during 2001 after the former director sold the land to a building company and took his shares out of the club.     we're visiting Perth in early December for my sister's wedding. My son (and myself ) enjoy aviation museums and so were hoping some of you have experience of those in the Perth area? We found one at Bull Creek which looks pretty good but wondered if there were others in the area? Cheers

    I saw a video of a Cirrus last week. The aircraft had run out of fuel about 200miles away from Hawaii but the parachute safety system allowed a slow descent into the sea (where they were thankfully rescued!). I read that they're a legal requirement on all German registered microlights now, makes sense for that worst moment.

    Thanks everyone. I don't mind having to do a few extra lessons / tests as I appreciate the quality of training probably differs from country to country, at least the hours will count and allow me to speed things up in the worse case :)

    C42 Ikarus at the moment. Long term I'd like to build (looking at the options from Vans, Rans, Sonex and Zenair) but I probably won't start that until I know where we are living as I can imagine the hassle of transporting a partially completed kit! We can't even fly circuits here as the cloud level is so low. I know there's a joke about the British whinging about the weather (and whinging in general for that matter), but I think we have a reason! I must admit that my sister sending us photos of the clear skies in Perth is making me a bit jealous.

    Interesting idea on using my existing hours, I assume there is no restriction on it having to have been in Australia? Thanks for the help! Twenty hours in winter......... I think over our summer we've had one week of decent weather (three days in a row were flyable....I was camping during this period ) and besides that it has mostly rained or been overcast. So much for the three months of glorious Mediterranean summer we were promised!

    I am currently partway through my NPPL in the UK with plans to upgrade it to the EASA LAPL (and possibly PPL if I have the funds/time but don't require more than LAPL) (A few bits on the differences here https://flyerdavid.wordpress.com/2013/05/15/lapl-light-aeroplane-pilot-licence-for-nppl-pilots/ ) As I see it, the NPPL is similar to the RA-AUS and the LAPL is not too far off the RPL (apart from weights) Has anyone on here converted from a UK/EU NPPL or LAPL? Thanks in advance, I've only just got my head around the UK/EU licences so hope you can advise on the Aussie equivalents/converting! P.S will hopefully be moving to WA (most likely Perth) in the next couple of years

    I think it was on the basis of others who may have used the aircraft or 'done the checks' earlier, but failed to check the fuel. For what is a ten second job, I don't see much point risking it. The aircraft I was learning on had a few minor issues which should have been reported on the checking out sheet but had not. I don't know whether this was a setup to ensure I think "oh eck, I'd better do all the checks!" or that the people using the aircraft before hadn't bothered to check it correctly.

    I might have to go all out for the PPL then A shame as your RPL seems quite similar to the LAPL (except that you can use up to 1 500kg whereas we can use up to 2 100kg). Our LAPL is like a diluted PPL with a slightly easier medical. With the way the 'beautiful' summer weather is in the UK, I might be getting my first flight in Oz anyway Had several lessons cancelled over two months without me getting in the air

    Funnily enough I did my pre-flight ground school last week where the instructor emphasised the importance of checking for contaminated fuel prior to each flight. I guess it is easy to become complacent :(

    hi I'm Jimmy and from the UK where I am currently partway through my NPPL/LAPL. We are hoping to move to Perth in the next couple of years so thought it an idea to get some idea of the aviation scene out your way!
