  1. No, the bulkhead failed on JAL Flight 123 because of an incorrect repair method, using two parallel repair plates instead of one plate fully covering the damaged area. Then another plate was added over the top of the two parallel plates, so the cracking that started again, which eventually caused the bulkhead failure, was not seen in later bulkhead inspections. 2. .....when he brought his hammer down on the anvil, it stopped all the incessant chatter amongst the crowd, and got everyones attention. Despite the slow talk of the Blacko, OT learnt long ago, that those who talk slow, think fast. The slow talking is just to make the other party think they're dealing with an imbecile, whereas the fact of the matter is, slow talkers have minds like a steel trap. As soon as the Blacko had dead silence amongst the crowd, he paused. Not a pause like the Remembrance Day pause, just a pause of around about 15 seconds, allowing the tension to build. The Blacko was a master of attention control. You have to be, when you're wielding big hammers at lightning speed with deadly accuracy. At long last, the Blacko spoke...... "You know, there's one thing........
  3. Brendan is correct, the D6 manuals do not show these symbols. They appear on the D10A and they're identified as G-meter values. The values can be reset in the menu, but it doesn't appear that you can remove the G-meter symbols from the screen in any way. The manual only says you can have a choice of displayed symbols. See page 5-11, or page 49 in the PDF page numbering. https://www.dynonavionics.com/includes/guides/EFIS-D10A_Pilot's_User_Guide_Rev_L.pdf
  4. So ... you're speculating the B777 just had an itchy bum?
  5. It was a LATAM B777-300, and after takeoff, it circled for an hour and dumped fuel, then returned for a successful landing. The aircraft has incurred a substantial level of damage and is undergoing repairs. An investigation has been launched into the reason/s for the tail strike. No-one is saying very much, but it must surely be incorrect weight-balance calculations. Boeing 777 drags tail hundreds of feet along runaway before takeoff WWW.NEWSWEEK.COM The incident, involving a Chilean LATAM Airlines plane, resulted in no injuries thanks to the pilots' quick thinking.
  6. I'm a bit late to the discussion here, but if you look on eBay under "steel carport" or "steel garage", you'll find that 6.2M is the maximum span you can get, before you need to move to a steel or timber truss construction for your temporary hangar. The bottom line is that any construction that requires 8M of span (and clear, unsupported span at the entry), won't be "lightweight", and you also need to consider just how to anchor the temporary hangar, as wind gusts will ensure it takes off like a kite, if it's not secured to the ground in a serious manner. 64 sq m of surface area is a giant kite just waiting to get airborne. The nearest thing I can think of for your request, is the aluminium-truss portable marquees, that are normally hired out, and which run into a sizeable level of expenditure for something measuring 8M square. You can occasionally find one for sale on the likes of FB or Gumtree. 7. ....the contrails dispensing switch. Not many of the general public knew that Cessna Centurions were the real contrail dispensing machines, not high-flying jets, as many thought - because the Cessna contrails were invisible, thanks to a secret formula that OT designed and patented, and which he sold to the CIA, thus ensuring OT his little-known place in history. The U.S. Cessnas were used to spread contrail fumes over States that didn't vote in a majority for Donald Trump, thus ensuring that the voting went the way the MAGA mob intended. Unfortunately, a side effect of the fumes from OT's contrail concoction was that it led to........

  9. This one did daily daybreak patrols along Route 2 in the far North of Phuoc Tuy, right past our fortified engineer compound at NDP (Night Defensive Position) Garth at Courtenay Hill. He was out to surprise VC or NVA laying mines and boobytraps in the road or roadsides, or simply trying to surprise enemy on the move. There was a sharp curve in Route 2 at the extreme right of the photo, and as he banked around that curve, I swear his wingtip was often only a few feet above the road. Below is an aerial view of Courtenay Hill on the AWM website. There's major confusion in the official records, NDP Garth and FSB (Fire Support Base) Cherie are the one and same. Australian Engineers from 17 Construction Squadron established NDP Garth in late 1970, as protection, while we quarried Courtenay Hill for road base for Route 2 upgrades. However, the NDP was later turned over to the Royal Australian Artillery, who then revamped the NDP into FSB Cherie. Aerial view of Courtenay Hill (left) at the commencement of Operation Overlord. 12. Interesting concept, the LaFlamme twin-rotor homebuilt helicopter - but quoting US$47,000 and 800 hrs for a complete build has to be the best aviation under-estimation I have seen in some time! Add in the fact that the builder could never find any takers to support his ideas - and talking about Ford V6 power, whilst showing a Buick V6 engine! - kind of makes you wonder about the accuracy of all that he describes! Les Helicopteres Laflamme LAF-01 WWW.REDBACKAVIATION.COM An interesting tandem helicopter that could have made its mark in the kit helicopter world, but struggled and re-tooled for commercial drone usage.
  13. Re the safety angle when using solvents, adhesives, primers, volatile cleaners and paints - the MSDS for each product is a worthy read, and especially taking note of the potential health risks. Many of these risks are long-term. In other words, careless handling and ignoring recommendations for methods of use, will catch up with you eventually. I have an Italian panel beater/spray painter friend who has always been pretty gung-ho about basic protective equipment and processes. He sprayed a lot of 2-pack paints with minimal protection, usually just a dust mask. But 2-pack paints and many adhesives and other industrial chemicals contain iso-cyanates, and these compounds are most definitely, seriously dangerous to your long-term health. My panel beater/spray painter mate has just had a kidney removed due to a kidney tumour. He's a little over 70. The MSDS for iso-cyanates warns that liver and kidney tumours are a possible result of exposure to iso-cyanates, and I have little doubt my mates gung-ho attitude towards proper protection (air-wash helmet for iso-cyanates) has been behind the reason for his kidney removal. And for some reason, I have regularly found that women are more susceptible and sensitive to all the dangerous volatile solvents and paints, possibly something to do with their hormonal makeup. But fortunately, most women are more cautious than most blokes, and regularly take notice of use and handling safety warnings and recommendations. Paying attention to the "good ventilation" angle is one of the other very important points involved in using dangerous products.
  14. Skippys caravan conversion is the best solution, an enclosed trailer beats them all for load protection. The amount of road debris thrown up and hitting the aircraft, with resultant damage, would have to be a major concern with any open trailer. But if you're planning on a caravan conversion, ensure you pick a steel or aluminium frame caravan, wood frames just don't cut it, for long term strength and lifespan.
  15. Sheffield in Tasmania has recorded air pressure in excess of 1044 hPa, an Australian record, beating the previously highest recorded air pressure in 1967. The bitter polar cold air mass from below Tasmania has even reached us here on the left coast - yesterday and today, the wind was like a knife, and the "apparent temperature" has been around half the observed temperature. 16. Skippy, I blew the tyre because it was an aged Chinese tyre showing signs of degradation, and I shouldn't have left it on the trailer for the trip. The trailer was loaded to the full 2000kg trailer gross limit. The suspension is a 4-spring leaf suspension with a middle rocker bar, and fully greased shackles. It's as good as they come for a regular-duty tandem trailer suspension. It has over-ride drum brakes on the front axle only, a fully-legal arrangement in W.A. They provide adequate braking under nearly all conditions except extreme conditions.
  17. Blueadventures trailer looks like a handling disaster waiting to happen, to me - due to the poor positioning of the wheels/axles in relation to the trailer frame and length. Trailers should always be constructed with the axles mounted central to the frame - or even better, 50mm to 100mm behind the centre point of the main frame. This ensures good handling, and a resistance to tail-wagging, especially when loaded. A trailer with axles mounted forward of the centre point of the trailer main frame is a guarantee that tail-wagging will result the instant the trailer is loaded, and hauled at highway speed. You have to remember that a tyre blowout on a rear tyre (always a likelihood), will result in immediate adverse handling, and initiate a tail-wagging event. I've just had that happen to me with a tandem (1.8M x 3.6M) enclosed trailer that is professionally well built with centrally-located axles. I was loaded to the limit, blew a rear tyre at 100kmh on a downhill run, and I can tell you, it took all my trailer handling skills to keep control of it. It was extremely fortunate at the point where I blew the tyre, the highway was extra wide and there were 3 lanes with a passing lane going the other way, so oncoming vehicles were well out of harms way. As it was, I was over the centre line trying to keep control of the vicious tail wag while trying to come to a halt with one basically tyre-less rim.
  18. I think it would be useful to study up on the number of aircraft crashes where radio calls featured large in the accident scenario. In particular, radio calls that were missed, and radio transmissions were were talked over by the other crash party making a call at the exact same time. The most disastrous aircraft accident in history (Tenerife) was largely caused by an incoming call being talked over. Then there's the lack of understanding of what was said, and what was meant. Thus we have standardised radio procedures and phraseology. The conclusion would have to be, that more calls, not less calls, is a big safety factor - especially where there's an ongoing lack of certainty in aircraft positions and intentions.
  19. The design criteria behind the BAE146 was straight-out quietness, to ensure they could run U.K. to Europe and return outside noise curfews. Plus, the little vacuum cleaner engines (Avco-Lycoming ALF502's) were plentiful and cheap, being a derivative of the Lycoming T55 that powers the Chinook helicopter. In addition, the design called for as much "off-the-shelf" componentry as possible to keep the construction and running costs down. And finally, they were designed for steep departure and arrival angles, so they could slot into tight airports in congested areas. Overall, they were a success by anyones measure, and they were produced for nearly 20 years. And yes, our dear Monarch would've had his licence lifted if it wasn't for the fact he was the Queens favourite son - after he landed too fast and too high, and shat himself, and locked the wheels and wrecked the tyres with excessive braking, when he overran an airstrip at Islay, and ended up bogging his machine. The Captain got a reaming for not taking over when it was obvious Charlies landing skills were deficient. I guess he was reluctant to tell a future Monarch he was taking over. /graphics/ICAOtype/B461.gif Accident British Aerospace BAe-146-100 ZE700, Wednesday 29 June 1994 ASN.FLIGHTSAFETY.ORG A BAe-146-100, operated by the Queens Flight, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident at Islay-Glenegedale Airport (ILY/EGPI), United Kingdom. 24. Skippy, how do these Hengst filters handle water in the fuel? I have never used them, only the plastic Ryco inline, pleated paper style - but the Ryco filters will block up totally with any moderate amount of water, and completely cut off the fuel supply. In an aircraft, I would expect an event like that to be extremely seat puckering.
  25. Not quite. Personal care soaps contain numerous additional ingredients that are not necessarily beneficial for tyre mounting.
