  5. The latest search approval by the Malaysians is based on work done by three highly qualified researchers, who have spent years researching the best ways to track down a missing aircraft. The researchers are Richard Godfrey, an aerospace engineer, Dr Hannes Coetzee PhD, a Design Authority on antenna designs, and Prof. Simon Maskell, MEng, MA, PhD, FIET, CEng., Professor of Autonomous Systems Electrical Engineering and Electronics at Liverpool University. It's not correct to say that an aircraft can vanish with no trace. It leaves traces in multiple places - and one of those traces was interruption of ham radio transmission waves. The radio waves are recorded by a system known as WSPR (Weak Signal Propagation Reporter - pronounced "whisper") . WSPR (amateur radio software) - Wikipedia EN.WIKIPEDIA.ORG In a fortuitous act, those ham radio transmission waves have all been logged since 2009, and the records are readily available. Richard Godfrey tracked all the ham radio wave disruptions caused by MH370's flight, and claims he now has a complete record of the flight - right to the point where it crashed into the Indian Ocean. Interestingly, the crash location closely follows the deleted, but recovered, flightsim waypoints left on Capt Zahari's homebuilt flight simulator - where he practised landing on a remote part of the Indian Ocean. More interesting is the fact that Godfrey has removed a number of the assumptions made by the previous search teams - and one important one, was the assumption that the aircraft flew a relatively straight course to its splashdown location. Godfrey has proven the aircraft made several turns during its assumed final course. Finally, Godfrey has removed another assumption - the one that the aircraft didn't drop into the ocean within a short distance of running out of fuel - but glided for some distance. Boeing did some extensive testing and found that the B777 could be made to glide for up to 110NM after fuel exhaustion - obviously by a pilot with skill - as in the Gimli Glider pilots. The ham radio wave disturbance record appears to indicate that MH370 didn't glide for any great distance after fuel exhaustion. The Immarsat record showed MH370 in a 15,000FPM high-speed dive right after fuel exhaustion. Godfrey states that he can find no WSPR record that shows MH370 glided for any distance after fuel exhaustion, and he believes the Immarsat record is accurate and reliable. Godfrey and his two assistant researchers produced a document detailing their research, findings and conclusions in March 2023.   11. The best way to acquire adequate insurance is to contact a broker who either specialises in aviation insurance, or who knows which companies deal with aviation insurance. Insurance for the likes of aviation is highly specialised and only a few insurance companies will take it on. They need to be able to understand the risks involved, and this also involves the insured party making very clear what activities they undertake, how often, where, and under what circumstances, so the insurance company is properly informed, and can calculate the risk accordingly. A broker works for you, to get the best deal that properly covers what you want covered.

  15. I have no idea what JOTA is, but if you mean the JORN system of over the horizon radar tracking, then there's at least a couple of qualifications as regards JORN's ability to see MH370. The aircraft disappeared in the wee small hours of a Saturday morning on March 8, 2014. It has been calculated the aircraft would've run out of fuel by 0800HRS AWST, and may possibly have crashed earlier, as the fuel burn of MH370 cannot be calculated. The JORN system is a Defence system, and as such, is under a substantial level of secrecy. Despite stating the JORN operates 24hrs a day, there is a possibility it was not operational for some reason at the time MH370 went missing. Defence will never reveal whether the system was operational or not in that time period, they are not about to reveal what is likely to be classified information. Secondly, the precise capabilities of JORN are also secret. Defence brag about how small the airborne targets are that they can reputedly see, but there are no doubt qualifications to those claims. One qualification is that, as JORN uses the Doppler Effect to track airborne targets, the movement of targets tangential to the base station array means that they cannot be picked up.   17. You just have to be careful about what Google throws up for search results. Scammers set up fake websites to scam people, and then "game" Google search algorithms to end up high in Google search results. A recent example is the legit-looking site recently exposed, that claimed to provide heaps of great information about upcoming welfare payments. But the payments are non-existent. However, the information provided is about legit earlier welfare payments - the scammers just make it appear the payments are going to be repeated. I think I'm reasonably savvy, but the fake "information" site took me in. However, after close reading of the "information", it became obvious to me there was something about it that didn't jell. The style of writing was poor. I suspected it was written by AI, but I didn't realise scammers do this setting up of "information" sites regularly, to set up unsuspecting people up, same as any other sting. Incidentally, if you come across a fake website (there's plenty out there, watch out for the ones selling bargain aircraft parts!), you can report them to Google, and Google will delete them from search results. Of course, this doesn't stop the scammers from just changing something about the fake site, and then getting back into Google search results again, though. It's a "whack a mole" game, just like trying to block scam phone calls.   18. Today, well over 10 years since MH370 vanished, the Malaysian Govt has agreed to fund a new search for the aircraft. The new search proposal has been put forward by Ocean Infinity, who previously searched (unsuccessfully) for the aircraft, in 2018. The new search will be on a "no find, no fee" basis, and is to cover a new, recently defined, 15,000 sq km area outside the previous areas searched. The new search is proposed to commence around March/April 2025. If the aircraft is found, Ocean Infinity will be paid US$70M. Possums are as big as Cougars and twice as vicious, and they lay in wait in trees, ready to drop on their unsuspecting human prey passing below. Not many people know that OT bears the scars of a W.A. Drop Possum attack, he's one of the few survivors of such an attack, and recounting the attack makes listeners hairs stand up on the back of their necks, with the listeners making sure, in their trips to W.A. that they never venture out at night under big W.A. trees, because they now know that.........   20. You can blame Henry Ford for the LHD car and truck operation decision. Taken without general consultation, and done with dictator-level Henry Ford authority. All U.S. vehicles were RHD prior to 1912. Your control abilities all go back to training. Most of us are right-handed, and favour that hand. Most Americans say, "I could never change gears with my left hand!" - but it only takes a little training to cope with changes, and develop the dexterity skills in the appropriate hand. I've driven and am competent in the operation of many dozens of construction machines, and they vary considerably in controls layout, even in direction of throttle operation. My Dad was a signwriter and painter and quite a good artist. He could start a big drawing or painting or hand-written sign with his right hand, and swap to his left hand with ease, and lose nothing by way of artistic skill. I'm sure he was born left-handed, but the schools in the U.K. in the era he was raised (very early 20th century) beat left-handedness out of kids.
  21. Population density is the tipping point for rail. European cities work well with rail and trams, because of population density. Here in Oz we suffer from the fact we're all spread out and like our space. But when the traffic congestion gets horrendous, and one prang brings the entire freeway to a halt, then the train starts looking pretty good. Plus, the cost of car ownership is a big burden for many people. A factor that is becoming galling to me, is that the police close an entire section of road (including freeways) after a major prang, nowadays. This closure can be for many hours, even a whole day. It's disastrous to a road traffic system.

Electrically-driven, multi-car set trains have the capability to handle up to around 400 passengers at once, unlike buses, which are limited to around 70-80 pax (up to maybe 160 on an articulated bus). Electric-drive train sets are also extremely low pollution level, and low operating cost on a per-head basis. They're faster than buses, and don't get caught up in traffic jams caused by car crashes. Trains have a longer lifespan than buses, 15 years for buses, 30 years for the modern stainless-steel, electric-driven train car sets. Electric train technology today is pretty advanced, AC drive motors, and regenerative braking operates down to 30kmh, meaning the disc brakes get little hard use.
  24. God forbid that we ever change over to driving on the right, half the nation can't drive properly on the left now! Probably about a quarter of the current crop of drivers seem to fail to understand that basic road rule of "keeping to the left"!! They park on the wrong side of the road, facing the wrong way (a chargeable offence in every jurisdiction in Australia), they fail to understand the dangers in parking in this manner - they corner wide, and come across to your side of the road at T-junctions and curves, instead of keeping to their side! - they drive down the middle of most urban roads, as if they own the whole road - and vast numbers fail to indicate, even when it's mandatory! We'd be better off re-educating a large number of current drivers to get them to understand basic road rules, instead of swapping to driving on the opposite side of the road! Besides, the cost to the nation of a swap to driving on the right is unaffordable, and the gains are insignificant in comparison to the cost.
