  1. You're on the money I reckon Mr Camel!! If 620 was used, you cannot re-tension the nuts, (of that size anyway) end of story! Loctite 620 is a retaining compound, high temp, high strength, can take up a 0.010" gap (from memory) and hold under high pressure. In other words on a small nut and thread it's the end of those moving without some sort of damage. I didn't realise this was used until Mr Slartipants () posted that quote from the manual. I'm almost of the thought, when people are re-torquing these nuts, it's just twisting the through bolt... if that's the case it would make pretty good sense why they are breaking. Not to mention not actually clamping the barrels together - hence small leakage showing prior to breakage.
  2. Best way is to calibrate it with another known calibrated wrench. Or the old fish scales trick...
  3. The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English". In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter. In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away. By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru. Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

  9. Ever tried lifting a BnS Tubs! Aero engines have the disadvantage of operating in drastically changing conditions, with minimal strength of components just to last till TBO! I rebuilt a 454 Mack engine the other day, each cylinder head weighed about 70kg!
  10. That's true... be interesting if they are similar through bolts breaking though wouldn't it.
  11. Does anyone know if the through bolts that break are fairly consistent in location? Top, bottom, left, right etc... Almost makes me wonder if the thrust/force path of the piston isn't in line with the crank. So when it gets a detonation it puts a lot of side load on the barrel, cracking, then pulling the head off the bolt/nut.

  15. Wages earnt we're a lot less back then also, don't forget that! But yes things are much more exy now that's for sure. I find dry hire rates are pretty good though, it's the fuel price that's killing it.

  19. Great news John! They certainly are, and it would be hard going from gliders to powered aircraft I reckon, gliders are that much more of an aeroplane! By that I mean, glide ratio... me coming into gliders found it hard to get the hang of the amazing glide range at first (probably not a bad thing!) but it was just so different. Airbrakes are magic indeed, can nail it exactly where you want it!

  21. In an emergency yes! Which is why you learn about Prec-search landings in training... but mate, it was the most amazing strip ever, smooth bitumen over 1000mtrs long.

  23. Problem with an air mattress is that it can get quite deflating when you hit a sharp spot on the ground... particularly in the middle of the night! I have this self inflating roll out mattress, pretty tiny, and nothing elegant, but it only weighs 800grams!
