  1. Camel, there area some of us who have the ppl exams under our belt, have the wherewithal to pay for the lessons, but have been dealt a blow by the stringent medical requirements of a ppl. One incident of a minor problem 5 years ago (not life threatening), has stopped me from getting a medical clearance so my 6 years, and 400hrs of Raa Aus flying doesn't count. No wonder the RPL sounds attractive to people like me when all that is required is a stiff drivers licence medical.
  2. Russ, no point blaming the hard working staff when the top management is responsible for the stuff ups we have been having. You comments are a little like shooting the horse because the rider gets saddle sore. Outsourcing wont solve the problem of procedures, change in policy and management attitudes will. The workers (remember that word) at the office have been nothing but helpful and attitudes like yours don't help anyone.
  3. Stewy, have you tried adding gel earpads to your headset, I wear glasses and they have been a lifesaver for me. I run David Clarks standard headset bought second hand and have used them for 7 years. Initially had the classes problem but fitted the gel earpieces and Voila...no more sore head/ears. Also add a softer pad that sits on your head. Noise cancelling sound good but I like to hear what the engine is doing, and the noise level (in Xair with a 2 stroke just in front of me) is not excessive.
  4. Is that the one in the harvester trailer in John TH hanger?
  5. no problem for me, look out the corner of my eye and note level in tanks behind the seat through the clear Perspex divider between the seats. Marked the tanks with 5 ltr increments. Easy as.
  6. The anti jab faction seems to be failing to distinguish between the fuse which seems to be a strong good one and a motor which seems to be the part having the problems. What results from the jab conversion with a rotax 912? Don't can the whole for one part failing. (I don't have one, don't want one, just saying in the interests of a fair go...)
  7. Seeing we are getting into semantics, does the two independent inspections mean you and one other, or you and 2 independent persons (making 3 in total?)
  8. That's why we do daily inspections, put warning placards in the aircraft. A responsible pilot will always rely on themselves to check the aircraft properly. How many aircraft have fallen apart in the air because a L2 or another pilot hasn't checked work done on a 19 aircraft? I tend to fly during the week, and if I do work on the aircraft then there is normally no one around to double check things. Speaking to a local L2 about similar things has produced horror stories of slack workmanship in some cases. I rely on me so I know it is done correctly. At least then I know my passengers/myself are safe and everything is done correctly. Relying on other people to keep me safe in this case worries the hell out of me. As I said before, if I don't know I ask,
  9. When the Xair was completed, it was, as required, inspected by me under the auspices of an L2 (I got him to check the progress at least twice during the build process and then after the initial 25 had been flown off it was checked again. . I don't have a problem with getting my work checked, I just have a problem with RAA Aus trying to boost costs when there is no reason. A 19 Reg aircraft is one that is built, flown and maintained by the builder at his/her own risk. I am not flush with funds, I chose 19 reg because of the cost, the fact I could maintain it myself and therefore keep the quality of the work up to the standard I require and the fact that I was relatively independent in what I did and flew. I am not stupid, I double check everything I do, I religiously do my daily checks before flying and if I don't know, I ask. Its called being responsible and self reliant.
  10. No I didn't make the engine, but then I didn't extrude the aluminium, knit the cloth or make the instruments,...your argument is...???
  11. Do we not do this as part of our days walk around any way?
  12. doesn't a 19 registered aircraft have a sticker that you fly in it at your own risk? All of a sudden I am not to be trusted to maintain the aircraft I built, have flown and maintained for 400 odd hours. Damned if I am paying a L2 or someone else to maintain/check my work. If I wanted to throw money at this sport/activity I would have bought5 a 24 registered aircraft and asked for a bank loan for the maintenance. The best check of my work I can have is the fact that if I stuff it up, I die. Why have a 19 category if they want to do this cr..p.
  13. Don't give a rats..., I built the thing, I maintain its engine be it Rotax, jabiru or VW. If these engines are that delicate and particular then who would want to buy one...Just sayin..
  14. already done, be interesting to see who gets in and how many voted.
  15. agree, good to know the aircraft, types of licence not so much from my viewpoint.
  16. Why is nobody blaming CASA and the incompetence of previous "drunken" senior management for these delays. I know we need to get this thing sorted but it doesn't help when we tended to employ self serving d..heads and then throw money at their incompetence. The recent people seem to be doing a great job given that they inherited a mess of paperwork and politics from the earlier crowd. I know the office staff area working like Trojans but it doesn't help when the goal posts were moved every other week for a while. How many of the previous management have used this organisation as a stepping stone to employment with big brother, or come from big brother with other agendas. I see lots of winging and some attempts at help but only a small number actually making sense with this subject. If I ran a business like this mob have done in then past then I would have wound up in the bankruptcy court very quickly. Lets get rid of the egos and self serving agendas (this is a recreational organisation after all).
  17. I agree Russ, I went through this and almost sold my aircraft until I realised its all about me flying and the enjoyment I get from it, not what others are doing either correctly or incorrectly. I fly because I enjoy it. I am a member of RAA Aus because I have to be to fly the aircraft I enjoy. The politics ands naysayers do not affect how I fly, my enjoyment when the wheels leave the ground or how I perform as a pilot. Blow the rest of them, get back to the basics of why you started flying in the first place and to heck with the rest of them. If you are happy with what you do, then beggar the rest, they are all grandstanding for their own agendas. I am the one that climbs into the aircraft, I passed my pilots certificate, not them, I fly my plane, not them. Just fly and enjoy and leave the politics to those that have nothing better to do.
  18. given the track record of the board selecting CEO/GM's I wait with bated breath. No reflection on the successful candidate, I wish him the best, but hopefully the board gets it right this time.
  19. Good if there was a power failure, at least you wouldn't see what was coming...
  20. Fun to ridge soar in the Xair, motor to idle and back and forward for height gain, cool fun on a good day...thanks gliding time.
  21. That should fill a huge hole in the market. Many people aren't enamoured with the apple style. Interested to see how mit travels...
  22. Get CASA to pay what they should as co-funding. GA doesn't seem to have this problem. Doom and gloom don't solve anything John, neither does upping the fees. Get the regulatory body to pay their fair share. Stop being negative and inject a little positive comment into this for goodness sake. Doom and gloom become self fulfilling. (my head IS GOING TO DROP OFF... WHOA IS ME...THEN...VOILA...OFF FALLS HIS HEAD.) Of course then the doctor..coffee..tea..is to blame...
  23. I always fly hemispherically anyway, didn't realise it was an ifr thing...
  24. Since when is 6000ft an IFR limited area. Cant we go to 10,000 nowadays as VFR?
  25. Its like the buddhist hamburger - one with everything
