  1. Andy, the "better place" is a matter of opinion. Please explain what was wrong with the LP aircraft. Trying to split rec aircraft owners into LP and HP owners is trying to set up a them and us situation and this brings the elitist attitudes into play. Why must everything be bigger, faster, flashier and more expensive. If you want a pi...ng contest then you are going the right way about generating one. I see LP rag and tube as the ideal way that new people can enjoy aircraft ownership, and experience our hobby without the large outlay/cost of the faster, more expensive aircraft. Not everyone has large incomes, not everyone can afford to pay 60 - 100,00o for an aircraft. I purchased my kit and assembled it for a touch over 28000 in the air. I could not have owned an aircraft if the price was not this low. Renting an aircraft at $100 - $200 per hour is out of the question for me. I fly my aircraft at least once a fortnight, I have done some large cross country flights (6 - 8 hrs). I dont have ulcers and I dont have accountants pushing me to spend less on the aircraft. I still work for a living and will be doing so for a number of years yet as I can't afford to retire. I think all Rec aircraft, no matter what they are, should be covered in the same organisation as we then have volume membership. Stop being so bloody elitist and just enjoy tour flying, in no matter what type of aircraft.
  2. Yep, the yellow terror will be slowly winging its way there again.
  3. Fully restored Aeronca chief housed at Goulburn. Flies beautifully
  4. I fly a kit built 95.55 aircraft, rag and tube with a 2 stroke Rotax motor. I applied for, and received, written permission to fly over built up areas from Raa-Aus. Contact the powers that be and ask them.
  5. I fly LP rag and tube, I have no problems with paying the licence and rego fees that we do now. I dont care what you fly as long as you enjoy it. If you can afford a golden Jab or a HP rocket then good on you. If we all stick together and just go by the current endorsement system and the rules pertaining to them we will have some clout. Leave the CTA and GA style stuff to GA pilots. We are "recreational pilots", I for one do not want to go head to head with a 747, 182, 310 or any other number larger than I am. Transit lanes are great, it enables us to travel around CTA areas instead of having to take huge detours. I love the sport (hobby) or whatever you call it. If you want to go bigger, faster, get the licence and aircraft to do it. Aircraft are aircraft, be it a 95.10 single seater or a 2 seater morgan or jab. The name of the game is fun and enjoyment, not comparing things to see who has the biggest (fastest and most expensive) one. I don't feel disadvantaged. I get where I'm going eventually. I dont need a mortgage to service my aircraft and I drink m,y coffee white with one if I ever drop in on you Cheers
  6. I use activ 2t for the 582 / two stroke. The reason is that it is mineral based and so sticks to the insides better for long inactive periods.
  7. Just about got this trailer sorted but was curios if it would make any difference towing the trailer with the aircraft mounted tail first, or nose first. The rudder and elevator would be clamped level to stop movement. The aircraft is a tricycle gear plane not a tail dragger.
  8. How can you go wrong with great music like that behind it.
  9. That is a great piece of footage. What brilliant aircraft.
  10. I use both. I plan the trip manually and have the calculations beside me when I am travelling, marking off the checkpoints and times. The GPS gives me a double check on course, drift etc and at 55kts IAS something to do that helps pass the time. If the GPS stops (and it has), then there is no problems, just keep using the trusty map and compass. I agree with Eastmeg2, its a good backup but the map lets you wander and look at interesting things.
  11. I met Max at the factory on his farm (airfeild) at Te Kowhai a couple of years ago when I was considering buying a Bantam. Max took the time to show me the operation and was only to pleased to answer any of my questions. Correspondence with him later on confirmed to me that the man was one of the good guys. RIP Max and very sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family and staff.
  12. J170, there are political ructions from the users of the airport over this, user access fees, and a number of other issues at the moment. Those of us that pay the avdata exemption fee get it a little better. The pi..ing off part of the whole deal at the moment is he is taking some of the enjoyment of just flying and I feel that this is unforgivable. I fly for fun, not for politics.
  13. The grass strip was mowed recently so a little long but usable at the moment. Ring the leasee of the airfeild re fuel call outs etc. The rest of the info from 68volksy is pretty well on the money. Cheers
  14. What about those wandering around on a busy, noisy day at the airfeild. They just may appreciate you not starting the engine without warning. I know we are meant to have a good look around before starting up but how many area concentrating on switched, chokes and settings and only give a cursory glance up before pushing the button. I have seen it happen on a few occaisions and the only indication we had that the mincer was about to fire was his call of Clear prop (made more out of habit than thought I assume). I call it every time, even when there's no one around so it becomes a no thought habit. (reminds me of the one about the air hostess that backed into a spinning propeller .......................................)
  15. Damn, had to change the bucket list to a 44gal (200ltr) drum list after that. Fantastic thanks Linda.
  16. Landing fees $20 to J Ferrara. He runs one of the flying schools there . Avgas available either by paying Mr Ferrara or using an aerorefuellers card. His phone number can be obtained from the NAIPS post for YGLB as he is the subject of a notam at the end of the forcast for YGLB. Ultralights not a worry there are a few of us there and both flying schools teach RAA Aus certificates. (YGLB is the home of Slarti, Robinsm, Volksy68 and a number of others on this site. Any queries, contact me by pm and we will sort them out. Cheers
  17. My Xair holds on the drum brakes to about 5000rpm then gets the creeps. I do run ups at 4000 so all ok there. Initiall installation runs on the new motor at 6500 rpm were done with the aircraft tied to a very solid object buried in the ground. and the stick pulled as far back as possible. The ride was still interesting, like riding a wild horse only more fun.
  18. My Instructor at Goulburn was (and still is) Teraya Miller. Very easy to learn from, great pilot and a nice person. This lady runs 2 flying schools, Goulburn Aviation and Canberra Aviation, and works full time for "big brother". Her work load would kill me. Check out the article by Eric McAndless in the December Pacific flyer about his Goulburn TIF with this lady.
  19. Stalled and dropped a wing?
  20. My eldest grandson has been an air cadet in Armidale, NSW for a number of years now. He is a corporal and loves it. He has done numerous camps at air force bases, flown gliders and been for flights in powered aircraft at Tamworth. Can't recommend it high enough!!!
  21. Does anyone have a list of apps they use on a windows phone?
  22. Only if you can catch us Graeme. Welcome back StringPuller. Look forward to your input.
  23. Because the basic Rag and tube minimal plane, the india trip, tail dragger endorsement, the flight to birdsville and the corner in the Xair, etc come first. However..................!!!!!. To paraphrase "... Long list, short pockets........" But I'm having fun!!!!!!
  24. Uncle of mine and his 2 brothers escaped from Guernsey during the war in a rowboat. (Off topic but you just reminded me of it). Sorry, back to topic.
