  1. It's easy enough to make an acrylic right angle bracket with the suction cup on the base and the SkyEcho on the vertical. It will then ideally meet the recommended mounting position when on top of the panel looking forward. To make sure the suction cup stays stuck I smeared mine with silicone adhesive/sealant before mounting. I don't remove it from the aircraft as its power is supplied from a 2 amp USB outlet behind the panel. I'll take pics on Friday when at the hangar, and post on Friday night.
  2. Thanks for the reply, Turbs Yes, some people may have difficulty with restrictions. It comes down to planning, preparation and flexibility. I have flown many interstate trips "low and slow", for example in to CTA at Avalon for display at the airshow more than once. Dodging CTA down the East coast isn't impossible, just a matter of being flexible with regards to weather and restricted airspace. We are all recreational flyers - why complicate our sport by carving it up into defined chunks? Let us all enjoy the amount of "rules" with which we are confortable.
  3. Turbs, what's your argument against 19- and 24- registered aircraft (which have bigger 4-stroke engines and look like a GA aircraft) being used as cross-country tourers? They still have to be flown by qualified pilots under the same rules e.g. equipment carried, airspace, radio procedures, etc. The only real difference is no CTA, not wanted anyway in my case. What exemptions do I fly under?
  4. Way back in 2006 I installed an Odyssey AGM. 8 years later I started to worry about its lifespan so replaced it and used the old one in the ride-on mower. It is still in service 9 years later! Expensive, but very small self-discharge when idle, and easily spins the Subaru. Significantly, in the aircraft it is charged by a 40 amp Denso automotive alternator with inbuilt voltage regulator. I'm not sure how these batteries go with permanent magnet alternators and PWM regulation as in Jabiru engines.
  5. Back to chokes - (I am late to this thread). I use the choke cable assembly from a 1980's Subaru, and my 1990 Suzuki Sierra has the same setup. The pull knob can be set anywhere in its travel and is held there by an electromagnet. When a coolant temperature sensor decides that no choke is needed (and this is quite soon after starting), the magnet releases and a spring returns the cable to the off position. You still have manual control but if distracted it looks after you.
  6. Hey watch it! I'm one of those "old farts" who happens to also restore vehicles and machines as well as fly. The video certainly mimics a single cylinder, twin flywheel Lister 4-stroke diesel commonly called a CS (for "cold start"). I have a 6 HP at 400 rpm example built in 1946. It worked for 50+ years driving a pump at Wirrabara Forest in Sth Aust and the only issue when it was taken out of service and replaced was a blown head gasket. That's all it took to have it running sweetly again. Throttled back to just above idle it's exposed pushrods fascinate viewers who have never seen 4 stroke valve operation on an engine.
  7. Novus 3-stage kit works well on both acrylic (perspex) and polycarbonate screens and canopies. Also does wonders for aging car headlights. Just add elbowgrease.
  8. It'a while ago since I stayed there, but Horsham Gliding Club used to rent a bed for a nominal sum and this included kitchen access. Worth a call.
  9. No, $895 with free postage was what I paid, admittedly back in April not long after the rebate was announced. The application only allowed whole dollar amounts so I had to round the price down!
  10. Just checked my bank account - $447 paid in today. Proof that the 2 months wait is well worth the effort of submitting an application. The Skyecho 2 must be about the best bang-for-buck safety investment available. It will be interesting to see if near misses in the circuit are reduced once more recreational and GA aircraft take advantage of this offer.

  13. Bennyboy, you did exactly what I did - pdfs saved on iPad. I suspect that the system was overloaded on day 1, giving the timing out that I experienced. Out of interest, what is the reference number ending of your application? Mine is 000067 which I assume means 66 before mine.
  14. Thanks Bennyboy. Today I too completed my application at a public library. I am travelling at the moment and had assumed that having all required documentation on my iPad would work. NO! After a phone call and last night a long chat session with Lorraine, the chat person, she suggested the library. Even then a very IT competent assistant spent about 30 minutes trying to get my files to transfer to the PC before uploading. Message:- the government appears to only work on MS. The screens needed come up quite differently on iOS, and the “Please wait” message doesn’t go away.
  15. It was very timely seeing this video today. This afternoon I was about to push the BushCaddy into the hangar when a friend phoned me for advice. While on the phone our state rescue chopper (Huey derivative) passed overhead and then looped back to land at the Jet A1 pump about 25 metres away. Didn't think about this until I saw the wing start to lift, but thought really quickly then! I ran to catch the wingtip just within reach overhead and my feet briefly left the ground until I arrested the lift. By then the chopper had touched down and had the rotors feathered. This occurred from the rotor downwash only, possibly concentrated by the hangar doors behind me. What could have happened if I wasn't close?
  16. Many years ago I saw 3676 at (I think) Goolwa, SA. It took me a while for the blue painted script name to register:- "Proctalgia" When looking for a plane to build I considered the Rebel, but thought it a tad heavy for RaAus rego.

  18. As stated, both the GPS antenna and SE2 are above the panel on top of the glare shield, and immediately behind the windscreen. I can easily relocate the GPS antenna, bur where to? I don't think it is suitable for external mounting (it was supplied with a suction cup mount for attaching to the screen and suggestions that the top of the glareshield is a good spot), and anywhere else indoors would be shielded by the metal airframe
  19. Might just be coincidence, but since commissioning the SE2 my old faithful GPS has gone haywire. Today it warned me twice that I was entering Adelaide control airspace - this while circuit bashing at Pt. Pirie. It has also shur itself down on several occasions. I have twice brought the GPS home for testing and it works perfectly, both on internal batteries and 12 volt power as it is in the aircraft. My only thought is that the GPS antenna could be too close to the SE2, both on top of the panel. Any thoughts please?

Gooday Kiwi, For the SE2 (an EC device) you need proof of purchase after the commencement date, proof that you own a currently registered Australian aircraft (RaAus included), an invoice (no installation cost permitted for an EC device) for your claim amount, bank account details for payment, and a signature confirming that you aren't telling porkies. In theory, simple! In practice, we'll wait and see.
  21. Thanks Mark No problem - I bought it weeks ago. Remember me asking you about possible shielding of the antenna with an adaptor on the suction cup mount? I made one out of acrylic and the SE2 does all it claims to do. Just have to wait longer for a possible rebate.
  22. Today (the opening date) I sat down to lodge my rebate application, having amassed all the required info ready to upload. Computer (or govt. department) says,"NO, not yet" The opening date for applications has been moved back to 12th August as of 3 days ago. So much for getting in early before travel plans in August!
  23. Thanks, Mark A great Australian Made success story. We can manufacture top-class stuff in Australia, as used to be the case. We just need some forward thinking leaders at the top of government. Oh dear, I think I've just found the problem holding us back.
