  1. One of the major obstacles is the dearture and arrival at places relating to immigration and customs. You cannot just leave anywhere or stop for fuel at random (foreign) places, especially before going through customs. There are designated "points of entry" and "points of depature" in countries. If the airport you need to go to is not an international destination, then it generally will not have customs facilities. However some places can bring in staff to process you with prior planning.
  2. It is mostly the screen that uses the power and produces the heat I think. Dimming the screen to the lowest setting where you can still see it will help. My tablet would not charge effectively inflight with a cheap usb adapter. I purchased a more expensive one with a 2.4 A outlet and now it can operate and gain charge at the same time. You may have to use a genuine charge cable too, as some of the generic replacement cables aren't wired correctly to sense the amps/power available.
  3. Did a runner to casa. Lasted 10 minutes. Came back to RAA on "contract". Works from home on "consultancy" rates I believe...... ( I see membership & rego rates up again..... wonder why?)....
  4. This company should be able to provide some information. [/url]https://www.whiteroseaviation.co.uk/about-us/ As an RAA pilot and aircraft owner, I'm keen to do Kupang in indo one day.
  5. It's very difficult to get by without a "card" of some sort these days. From hiring cars to motel rooms, they all want a card. I use a "Qantas travel money" card. You use it EXACTLY like a credit card. It is mastercard based. You need to have money in the account to use it (there is no actual credit) and it generally takes less than 24 hrs to transfer into it from your bank account. Advantages are zero fees and qantas points. (I just cashed in some points for a caltex starcard. Enough for a tank of fuel)

  7. Not among the younger (teen) generation I think. Red Bull may actually be not strong enough, with alot more competition these days.
  8. I thought Rotax stopped any "on condition" authorisation and the RAA backed that up? Personally, I would still run it but obviously for private use only. You couldn't "hire & reward" or use for any training. If your engine is a 2007 build, it probably has the upgraded crankcase which make it a 2000 hr tbo also. Which makes it more of a reason to keep running it.
  9. I guess into the wind is SUPPOSED to be the correct direction. Especially for light aircraft. We had a bit of a comical situation here when the aircraft in the circuit were all going one way but the wind was blowing either side of 90 degrees across. Then aircraft were taxiing out, seeing everyone landing slightly downwind and demanding a direction change. Not realising in another minute or two the wind would swing 20 or 30 degrees and make THAT direction downwind.
  10. We have a board? I thought it was just the M&M show...... (Sarcasm, before anyone jumps the gun)
  11. Set up for the drama (and youtube views)? All seemed a bit too easy to get picked up off the mountain and taken back up again...
  12. Add in what "repairs" do to the resale value, even if insurance covers it. And the lack of use by you or anyone while waiting for assessment, parts, repairs, etc.... I don't see any advantage to clubs for "vanilla" training aircraft in a cross-hire situation rather than owning their own. Unless it is specialized. ie a tail wheel.
  13. If people are being killed during and because of the training, you have to ask what's the point OF the training? 6000 fpm ...... wow....
  14. I use 3 of these Slap On Sun Visor (Extra Large) But I do like the idea of the perforated stuff.... A skippy said, so cheap to try....and probably better sun protection. I still feel the sun burning through the tinted stuff.
  15. You can't trust super either.... I had a friend who was in a good working position but was older (50) with 2 young children. He decided he wanted to be "setup" by 60 and came up with a "salary sacrifice into super" plan with a financial planner. He was sacrificing 70% of his pretax salary and everything was moving according to plan UNTIL the govt decided to change the super rules. Totally ruined his projections and planning and the stress gave him mental issues. The govt talk about planning for the future...... you make the plan..... then they change the rules. A total scam, the lot of it...
  16. Learn to fly first..... see if you like it. There are kits and there are kits..... Some kits come with no more than the raw materials. Some come with machined, fabricated and drilled components. Don't forget hardware such as bolts, pins, wheels, tyres, brakes and instruments. What's included? The price SHOULD reflect the different kit states of pre assembley and completeness. There's a saying along the lines of, if it's not built in 12 months it might be build in 12 years... You need to look at your own personallity whether you have the persistance to complete or not. I decided to buy factory built and "service the debt" rather than build. I'm happy with that, but have alot of respect for those that do build.
  17. If flying, a PLB is compulsory. It doesn't matter what else you have. Very important you register it. Beacons - Australian Maritime Safety Authority You can update and add lots of info. Fuel, range, pics, POB, telephone numbers, email, etc (whatever is easier to find and rescue you) SPOT is a great device allowing designated others to follow you. I believe it is privately run out of the usa and they contact amsa when an SOS is activated. If you carried a PLB and SPOT, you would of course have your SPOT listed on your PLB registration. The SPOT is not a replacement for a PLB.

  19. I go through Bill Owen. Aviation Insurance | Aircraft Insurance Broker | Bill Owen Insurance Brokers I have had public liability and hangar insurance for a number of years.
  20. I think he was based at the margaret river strip at some point and had his helicopter damaged overnight which may have been the last straw. In the end, I don't think it ended up being his helicopter that was causing problems. There are a number of private resorts and residences that ferry people in and out from Perth virtually daily. It was one of these that was the culprit but he was blamed as he was the only one publically advertising helicopter flights.
  21. Really doubt they'll get it. The EPA has alot of noise restrictions there on the number of circuits, night flying etc. Some time ago the council thought they were smart in offloading noise complaints to the EPA and that has come back to bite them. There is at least one wealthy neighbour who has his lawyer on speed dial, and isn't afraid to use it at the hint of an aircraft engine. And I really do mean lawyer.... Of course the shire may have forgotten to tell Qantas all that.... lol. A few of the other shires down that way are not particulatly interested in aviation at all as well...... it upsets the greeny/alternative lifestyle types if you know what I mean.... Peace and tranquillity. ...maaan...
  22. Most people think being constantly watched and monitored is fine........ as long as it's not them being watched and monitored. I'm against it personally.
  23. Hang on..any sort of alarm or detection device just treats the symptoms (post fact).... Legs get ahead of the game and not put suspect pilots in an airplane first of all..? There doesn't seem to be an extensive number of similar incidences, so let's just treat this as isolated, and educate pilots to self report and acknowledge their state of fatigue.
  24. OT is still in the race. Might be coming down to a photo finish....
