  1. Great news! You left the ACT just in time. Despite the supposed global warming, the ACT and surrounds have experienced their coldest winter in about 50 years. Frequently the overnight temperatures have been down to minus 8 degrees Celsius. Brrrr.
  2. MJ: Are you planning to fit the cowl outside, Aussie-style, or inside Italian-style?
  3. It is a great place Bones! I also popped into the museum a few years ago and was impressed by the variety of aircraft on display. The B52 is very imposing: they had to drain wetlands, place 'fill' into it to wheel the B52 across to the museum site, remove the 'fill' and then fill the wetlands with water afterwards. This is quite a mission. It required a signed Presidential Order to allow a B52 to be on display outside of the United States. This B52 is the only such example. The very first model plane that I ever built, aged 11, was an Auster Autocar. There was one at that museum. It was flown by a Salvation Army padre for many years who "went the extra mile" to visit very remote stations in the top end bringing practical help and the gospel for many decades. All this in his trusty Autocar which clocked up thousands of hours. Eventually, the Auster had to be retired so the museum snapped it up as it is significant part of the NT history. There were some nice examples of AUF-style aircraft there too. My two daughters and my wife thought they got the better end of the bargain because they went shopping for a couple of hours while I only went to the aircraft museum. I know who got the best deal.
  4. Hopefully she won't jump on the rudder pedals just when you are landing.
  5. I also think that! The DooMaw is a gigantic task. I take my hat off to you Alan. I also take my hat off to you Mark: this rebuild is amazing and I love reading the updates when they come through. I hope your (tedious) cleaning and prepping will be all completed by the time you read this.
  6. Which colour are you aiming for: the top (GEMILIS AERO) or bottom Savannah (ZEKE-15)? Neither of them appears steel blue to me.
  7. Wow: they are huge screens!
  8. Hi Jess, It is nice to see you here on the forum. Welcome!
  9. G'Day Mario, Welcome to the forum!!
  10. Hi Mark, We should have a Wairarapa catch up when you are here. If all goes according to plan, my Savannah construction should be well under way by then. I am about 35 minutes drive away from iBob which may put me fairly close to perrynz (who I haven't met yet). If all our Savannahs get airborne, we should be able to form a SWAF (Savannah Wairarapa Air Force) around here. I was the Mule that carried four KyleMark flap brackets into NZ. I believe that by the time we are all flying, we should all have the same flap brackets in place. I landed (as a passenger) at Hood Aerodrome on Tuesday in a Piper Cherokee. We taxied past fallowdeer's Savannah just before he took off. So far, he is the only flying member of the SWAF. Hopefully not for long. I look forward to catching up with you next February!
  11. Here is the financial calculation: Nine coins in. Thousands of dollars to get them out.
  12. I have looked at the picture you posted and I am fairly sure that it is him.
  13. You're making great progress, Tom. I am still waiting for our local Council to approve the 'garage' (aircraft factory) that I want to build. They told me that this takes "20 working days" to approve "unless they have questions about my plans at which point the 20 day clock starts ticking again". Add in the weekends, and it becomes a 30 day wait. I should find out mid-July. I need to get my garage built so that I will have a dedicated space for building my Savannah.
  14. The features of a Sting S4 and an Aeroprakt A32 are markedly different. What made you choose the S4?
  15. That's a very interesting concept which I have never heard of. Thanks for sharing this. I wonder if U-Ship will transport an aircraft engine from the United States to New Zealand?
  16. I wonder if U-Ship will transport larger aircraft too?
  17. Hello Francois, to the Recreational Flying forum!
  18. Do you know what is coming? Do you mean there "will soon be an RA-Aus IFR rating available at a town near you"?
  19. Hi Mark, When I contacted Aerokits the (then) NZ Savannah distributor Reg indicated that you could get no credit if you ordered a kit without instruments because the kits come in set packages. Perhaps this has changed from when you bought the XL kit? I am definitely interested in an MGL or Dynon set up as this tends to reduce overall weight and, after all, we are in the 21st century now so why not a glass panel? Weight is not the only consideration. The motor I am thinking about is likely to weigh about ten kaygees more than the RowTax so I need to try to think of different ways to lighten the Savannah by this 10 kg. The easiest seems to be: (a) no carpet. (b) glass panel rather than steam gauges. © fixed seats rather than adjustable. (d) polish rather than paint. I don't want to do (d) so that leaves (a), (b) and © to consider. A Zenith owner in the United States reckons they saved 9.5 pounds (about 4.5 kg) by fitting a large screen Dynon rather than a set of steam gauges. If I keep the ASI (as you seem to have done) then I may save 4 kg. Carpet may be another 2.5 kg and I believe the adjustable seats are a little over 2 kg per seat heavier. All up, I could save around 10.5 kg, a little more than the weight of the non-Rotax motor. Getting back to the instruments, how do you rate MGL compared with the Dynon (which so many US CH-750 owners seem to be fitting)? PS: If I personally lose a few kilograms, I may be tempted to put the carpet into the plane after all:cheezy grin:.
  20. Mark, I noticed that you kept the ICP-supplied ASI. Do you use a separate pitot tube for the MGL and the ASI or are both connected to the same?
  21. Nice Tom, What is next?
  22. If you look carefully you can see the selfie stick in the bottom right quadrant of the picture.
  23. Hello Majkim, nice to see another aviator from the US of A! Perhaps you could share some of your experiences and/or photos? Regards, Eightyknots
  24. Perhaps just an "RV" endorsement
