  1. when crossing the street you can never predict the outcome - you have a fair idea though if you had 2 paddocks - one with shorter or flattened grass - the other long - the choice would be easy you could try a takeoff roll - in the 1st 50m you would know if things were looking OK
  2. don't know if the following would actually work for an ultralight .................. but just read a book where pilot in an ag plane (big feet) landed on a tight coastal paddock (to do some fishing) before takeoff he ran up and down the strip a few times to flatten long grass and had a marked take off run ......................... might not work with skinny tyres - worth a thought and a go though ?
  3. irrespective of any outcome Ryan .................... I think the majority of us appreciate what you have told us You are a more experienced pilot cause of it (and some of us will lean from it) I've been to that strip and did not have a problem - also plane I fly you get nose wheel off the ground at say 10 knots - so I guess my drag decreases a third ? Thanks ryan
  4. Only Total WW2 Plane Nerds Should Even Try This Quiz You got 14 out of 14 right! Full marks! Rank: Air Chief Marshal
  5. give the neighbours a bottle of scotch and a bottle of sweet sherry every Xmas, Nick the'll eventually weaken and think that noisy thing you fly in ............. is bloody marvellous
  6. WOW - $ 457 per annum sub ................ sounds like a golf club gympie aero club takes the view that they would rather have the person rather than the money (only $ 60 / annum sub) (the club gets income from hangar fees so the sub is not critical for funds)
  7. what about a jail house Ian if you get banned - you throw the avatar in the slammer - we can go and see who is doing time
  8. what about - VFR has to be 1000 ft vertical from cloud I have done some gliding and I'd find it difficult to believe that all gliders stay 1000 ft vertically away from cloud at ALL times
  9. how does 24:1 sound ? - glide ratio for a big bird - numbers from post 35 cruise ? - 35,000 ft 140 nm - 850,000 ft glide = 24:1
  10. I'll halve that Old K (average 50 km / h) if a car could do 5,000,000 kms - the automotive manufacturing industry would be ruined car salesman would be hiring the mafia to pour sugar in car fuel tanks at night ............... etc etc
  11. Tell us more onetrack ! ............ sound like a great story $ 10m loss for the paltry fee of $ 105 (115 less the 10 toll saved)
  12. .................. ain't that life !
  13. Gee thanks Turboplanner - I try my best ! Stuff quality and value ............. although they are fine attributes we all don't come out of the same mold participation an opinion is way more important ........... it adds to the fabric of the conversation - hence number of posts works well (all for fun with rank)
  14. your postal code in a way is a ranking system (or seems to be used as one in surveys) ............... and we seem to be able to live with that the number of posts probably indicates interest, wit, keeness, good intent, a person enjoying and using the site - number of posts (as opposed to likes) seems OK to me
  15. as said before - I am told the NZ model for accident compensation ? has been beneficial - a levy is paid by each tax payer ? if you lose a finger its so much - if you lose a leg .................. you get more. A life, more again no worse than any levy that any Oz now pays for the courts, pills, roads, health, aviation safety (should I also mention pollies ?) etc etc could be something to consider & might be a fairer society of course any change will mean someone will miss out on the existing money shuffle in our Courts
  16. at least it did n't go 'pop' ............................. most did - unfortunately
  17. (the non medical viewpoint) there seems to be a growing opinion that there is so much technology available that some / many prescribed procedures and prescriptions may be unnecessary or harmful its true, I watched an ABC program on it the cure might be more harmful than the ailment (I now expect all trained medical persons to defend their position !) ................... or is this just a popular misconception ?
  18. seems airlines and health agencies have the same strategies DR ? ................. always enjoy your dissection of the 2
  19. I don't think big superannuation is any answer ...................... a cheque does not stop mental / instability (assuming that's what occurred on MH370)
  20. Chilling stuff - whoever the culprit ....... Does that Level of cockpit side security still exist ? - no one with knowledge can probably answer ? - but I still think there should be a mechanism to deal with megalomania int front window
  21. 2.12 is the most optimistic in that design looks like it could carry numerous passengers ............... Boeing should consider R & D for this concept
  22. .................. please deliver all political clap trap elsewhere (religion as well) why ruin a good thread with such #$%^^&^%%$$#@%^&*&%$@#$%^&*((*&^%$@#$%^&*((*&^%$##$%^&*(
  23. Well said m6 - never considered the design and build importance till u put it that way. It's a founding ? Principle and we should chisel it in stone - we should get that enshrined asap - ignoring ? politics maybe don Ramsey when he gets out on parole - assuming he doesn't pick up a habit - can help - how bout it don or others ?
  24. ..................... tis an Agricola
