  1. Been balancing stuff for more than 50years Andy. Balance is done for many reasons including internal loads. If you balance each part you do a better job and can inter change parts quickly. Static balance is only suitable where the object has minimal length. Reduction gearing introduces issues direct drive doesn't have. External overall smoothness doesn't mean all is well in there. Counterweight extra shaft rotating engines have Higher bearing loads as the factor is higher, . Weight prohibits their use in aircraft engines (and they are a silly idea anyhow). Cranks in aero engines are as light as possible and don't have the balance weight cars etc do (Excepting Radials) where they are massive with say Nine reciprocating bits hanging off One crankpin. to oppose.. There's also "Torsional " vibrations which you can't feel, that can be destructive at critical RPM's. and put great loads on the reduction gears and crankshaft. Nev
  2. You wouldn't know for certain that it was wake turbulence,. You frequently hit your own wake in a steep turn where the G loading is much higher. Landing somewhere with trees down each side i needs special attention also. Be on the alert for weird wind s ALWAYS. Helicopters and Heavies have the worst wake effects. When a glider is towed it will go through the tug plane's wake when it goes from above to below. Nev
  3. Anything with length HAS to be dynamically balanced. The rotation rate used doesn't need to be high unless things are distorting massively. . Static balance is good enough for most U/L props. Balancing engine Gearbox Prop combos all together is fraught with hazards and complications. Nev
  4. Most of the "grounded "wooden wings had glue problems. They Used 'Casein". No Ply skin is going to last well left in the elements.. Nev.
  5. Sulphur is bad stuff in any fuel.. 'Ships engines designed to run ot Bunker fuel, Essentially Crude oil ,run at Nevinternal temperatures that enable the engine to handle it But I still stinks to High Heaven and is only used More than 200 NM from shore. (in theory).
  6. How Many LADIES on this site? Nev
  7. Why be there when it's soaked? Would the drome still be serviceable? Nev
  8. Just a little FAN tagging along full of AWE. Nev
  9. Do you fit Gust locks? . Nev
  10. Could be very momentary. I'd rather CONCENTATE on where the Plane is heading, with a T/W. . Height judgement is hard on CALM water. with a float plane. ALL pilots look outside when landing. A radio altimeter is sometimes used to CONFIRM not just rely on in my opinion... Nev
  11. DRY wood or a Pale MATT surface. Scribing criss cross lines on it will help. Calibrated to your plane. Nev
  12. You're just toying with the problem. The plane(s) should be secure in a hangar built strong enough to withstand any likely winds and then some. Your "Bird" IF you MUST have a tie downs do it properly. Big enough cement Blocks flush with the ground and a ring to lift and tie to. The PLANE may still be there but damaged and overstressed.. Nev
  13. They are a sleek design but the Elevator is quite touchy till you get used to it.. Nev
  14. As long as you both have made it clear to each other. but it's as it is on water, Rivers etc Be on the RIGHT. Pic 's sit on the Left (except some choppers.) A runway occupied by another plane is not available to any other aircraft. (officially). IF you backtrack on the runway any turn has to go OFF centre so make sure your turn radius is tight enough to stay on the runway.. Nev
  15. You need to "Blow that up" to see the detail. Nev
  16. You'd probably have to kick the engine with your foot to notice anything amongst the Vines and undergrowth. Nev
  17. Small planes are not built so that you can hit things with them and just fly off as if nothing had happened over a crowd of people. How does Paint fall off and nothing else happen? Be a great Paint job. Nev
  18. The Blue one is only the clear coming off. I don't like using it, but it's common these days. You can't blend a repair in.. Keep paint thin on Aircraft. Especially FABRIC covered which causes cracking. Nev
  19. It was a great demonstration of Bad airmanship on public display that put others lives at risk as well as his own, Being so public as well, HOW can it be ignored? Nev
  20. Yes there's not a lot of point in overpowering a draggy plane. You'll get into the Air quicker but not much else.. Nev
  21. With the same engine a J 230 does about 115 knots Nev
  22. They pretty much all use the same type of Oil rings these days. IF they use much oil they don't meet emissions standards. You hardly ever see a car blowing BLUE smoke. There are a few with stuffed CAT. Converters. Late Models that STINK. (Petrol) engined. Nev
  23. You ned to download the HEVC extension, whatever that is. Nev
  24. Jeppesen was the Most reliable source of weather data. Better than BOM. Always used it going to Cocos -Christmas Island. That was before 89. Nev
