  1. If the oil gets dirty, it's bad sealing rings and/or rich mixture. The extra clearances were applied to the LAST of the first Buick derived engines. GM Aus made One size piston for ALL bores to save money. ie No class sizes and selective fitting in THOSE motors so extra clearance had to be allowed and those motors were a bit more mechanically noisy .Nev
  2. So called NIGHT VMC is a crock also. Nev
  3. It's tiger country alright. The last place to be in that vicinity in those conditions. . When icing conditions exist you MUST get below freezing level quickly. Nev
  4. When Mainwheels are aquaplaning the plane only remains on the centreline by rudder use and keel surface effect. The tyres have no grip at all. Like driving on black ice. You can be sliding at 30 degrees to the way you are going at 130 Knots. When the tyres eventually grip you really feel the sideways force.. Staying ON the runway is critical to success.. Nev
  5. The Iveco probably holds more oil and it would be an ED (extended drain with more additives oil) type of oil. most likely on oil analysis. The Renault Trafic is 30,000 kms between oil changes.. I think a large(r)filter would give more assurance. Oil doesn't wear out. Additives may. Oils can be re refined. Nev
  6. Why don't you respond to the Points I made instead of getting personal ? IF someone asks me a genuine question I try to answer it. I DO deal in facts and am aware that they may be challenged. That's part of the deal, but attacking the person is not on.. Nev
  7. This matter should have been covered before you ever went solo. Peter. IF you ever get blamed for causing damage or injury or worse you will find out the Hard way. Also , you have NO WAY of knowing my involvement or experience in these matters, so don't JUST lump me in some category that suites your argument.. Capitals are shouting or for EMPHASIS. When you are "In command" the buck stops with you. YOU task is to achieve the SAFEST outcome in the circumstances. Not save the company money, or get home sooner. Lives before Property. Nev
  8. Most of the engine wear is in the warm up Phase. Taxi's do 3 times the engine mileage of the average car . Engine rebuilding is confined to Collectable older models. That Industry is a shadow of it's former self. By the time your engine is cactus the car is not much good either. Modern cars engine life is quite high, even smaller ones unless they have an inherent fault that reflects in their resale value/. Clutch and brake wear reflect user driving patterns. Modern cars are pretty good seeing no one particularly looks at them till they stop.. Nev
  9. Oil additives do wear out but I'd rather change the oil as the other effect is controlled by blowby.. The oil still accumulates acids from combustion products. Nev
  10. Friction modifiers in fuels?? Nev
  11. There will be less and less who bother. Nev
  12. In Matters AVIATION, YES.. Most definitely. You are the Master of a Vessel. Nev
  13. PRIME concern is what is most SAFE in a Court of LAW. Nev
  14. Too much "Unfriendly" Country and Water fora single engine, Piston plane with no de-icing thanks. Nev
  15. I wouldn't want one THAT weak either. Nev
  16. THAT wouldn't stand up in court. Nev
  17. If you are counting extra Miles as a risk, why fly at all? THAT will lower the risk. Nev
  18. A good question. It might have to do with runway length and fire services at the destination or a possible wheel overheat condition where retraction is not safe. Nev
  19. Dunno how he passes his medical. Nev
  20. Avgas OCTANE ratings are different to Mogas, and give two figures one for Lean and the other for rich. Nev
  21. There are ways of watching the Landing gear of a heavy as the wheels touch down. Believe me the wheels move back a long way and you never land with the brakes on. With antiskid it's not possible, anyhow. Without antiskid Large planes would blow tires most of the time. Nev
  22. Tailwheel planes are directionally unstable when on the ground but so are tri gear when you land nosewheel first. Called "wheelbarrowing". Landing too fast. There was a spate of it when tailwheel planes became more rare. There's two ways to land a Tailwheel plane. 3. point (SLOW) and wheel it on. (uses more runway). That's just the start of it. It would be possible to do an entire flying career without ever flying a T/W Type. Just don't fly with lazy feet. The pedals are not footrests. Nev
  23. More WEIRD than wonderful... Nev
  24. and MUCH easier to land. A Piper Cub would be OK. A Thruster would be better. Nev
  25. Mogas is not a quality controlled produce like avtur and avgas are. The liquid cooled heads should make the 912's more tolerant. High boost at low(er) revs is like being stuck in top gear up a hill.. Nev
