  1. ALWAYS very SAD when it happens. I've had some extreme wind events LUCK played a part in but I'd already put all I had into it.. IF wind had anything to do with it That aspect will get worse. Hot day, unstable atmosphere at low levels. Localised HOT reduces lift. (Lower air density). Gusts=. airspeed fluctuations. Always be ready with the throttle. Nev
  2. "Just as easy as driving a CAR" ? NO. It's nothing like it.. The airflow over the wings and nothing else keeps you from dying by falling. Gusts are invisible mostly. . One mistake is all it takes. ANYTIME. Nev
  3. It's a rich mans World. Nev
  4. I've never heard of a lot of that being done. People would lease planes to a school which might have arranged such hire but it would tend to not be weekends .. The arrangement for the owners might defray some costs of ownership but the Plane often gets a lot of work. It's complex Insurance wise and you don't know what Knocks it has had. It's bad enough hangar sharing with people who are not careful moving your plane to get theirs out.. "Hangar Rash". Nev
  5. The merlin is the only motor of it's type to NOT have rollers in the cam followers. It's not uncommon to scuff them on start up. the Curtis does suffer from water leaks a bit around the cylinders. Nev
  6. Not the most damaging of tools. I had a Giant shifter left in the front of an R-2000 in Lae. For some reason ESP? I decided to remove the seat belt and open the window to hang out and have a good look. Never done it before or since. They had been blowing the Magneto's out with dry Nitrogen. A common procedure in the tropics. Nev
  7. I thought a pusher was wanted? Last sentence. Nev
  8. There wasn't a shred of evidence of that. Nev
  9. They are very good but FOD and large birds will take them out. You might still get the odd bearing or turbine disc let go or a burner can burn through the side. They'd be something like 25 times better than pistons for reliability. At any one time there's a lot of planes in the air around the world. Nev
  10. The Saphire prop would suit.. Nev
  11. It's when they "sub" stuff out that the quality drops. Lowest bidder gets the Contract. Like JEEP_ and Indians in the 20's. I think everyone does it to some extent. OEM is the listed original product manufacturer. !2 month replacement warrantee might suit a small tyre inflator that would not inflate one tractor tyre without overheating and dying. Nev
  12. It's NOT likely to be "better" than the Rotax so must compete on price OR some other advantage. IF some fault develops in the Rotax line it would also be in the copy as well.. The higher performance models are very complex and the crankshafts can only be done at the factory to much higher toque test figures on the press fits. Breaking head studs must be a concern. There's only 4. Nev
  13. Some of the Subaru's get detonation problems with deposits. and have to be cleaned out with essentially naptha if I recall correctly. EGR build up is a problem when you have engine blowby oily fumes. mixed with soot. Some cars would get so much build up on the under surface of the inlet valves that the port would effectively be blocked 50% by quite hard carbon. No MAGIC solution is going to remedy such conditions. Nev
  14. I wouldn't be doing it to anything I own. They also say to change the oil after doing it. I doubt ANY engine manufacturer would recommend it. Nev
  15. The KIA Carnival's block split in two. There's quite few vehicles out there that are like hand grenades. The Wreckers price for an engine (or transmission) will give the best indication.. I'm not going to name them as I don't like Paying lawyers. One fairly popular Van is included.. Things can be considered good when there's a lot of them out there. Not always so. Some quite expensive models are just ready to cost you a monty IF it's out of MAKERS warrantee. The dealer extended ones often have a "service by US" condition for validity. Nev
  16. OT That used to be the way many Aeroclubs did it. If you had a Hangar fire it would be a big one. With bigger stuff you only have the required fuel in board which is only rarely FULL tanks. Even with the DC9-20 which has a small endurance I think I only ONCE ever took off full. . You are usual Weight limited and It may have been when I noticed DC-9 Captains hair turning prematurely WHITE I considered moving onto something with less pressure on the driver. To fly It was a Cowboy Pilot's dream machine. Nev
  17. Don't think so. The Fan blades have to handle lumps of Ice too.. The BIG ones at the front most of which is bypass... Nev
  18. A built in "overspeed" indicator. Now everybody will want one. Nev
  19. As a pilot when I travel and something goes awry all I hope for is that those up front do what they should be adequately trained to do. THIS one happened at the most critical time but we all trained for such things at every Sim practice and renewal. IF you mucked it up you're out of a job if you subsequently don't come up to scratch. Its seems this crew did as they were trained so it's a non event but it's not over till you are safe again. I've been "down the Back" when the crew had stuffed up big time but I doubt the ordinary passenger would have known what was going on and "Ignorance is Bliss". Statistically Civil Aviation, Particularly JET RPT (not charter which operates to much less stringent rules) Is VERY safe and has been for quite a while. It only takes ONE bad decision to change that though. You'd have to wonder though with the grass fire how they would have handled the Plane on fire at the same time. Foreign object damage could have caused the turbine Blade(S) failure. Once one goes those downstream get mangled too,. It's usually CONTAINED as this one was. The location of the Engines on this type makes FOD a bit mor likely Than with some others. IF it's a flock of seagulls you can knock out multiple engines although they are supposed to take frozen chooks. Nev
  20. Spray in while the engine s running?? I've sprayed water into an extremely TIRED Chev and it cleaned the COKE out. it didn't matter as I'd reco'ed anther ready to drop into it. The rattle cans I'm referring to are for the exterior. of the motor and most of them these days have plenty of alloy.. I would not do it on an AERO Engine EITHER OR a collectible old car or bike. How many hours to get carbon. on the Pistons etc?". Depends on how well it is tuned. Scott bikes I have owned running on modern 2 stroke Oils NO carbon of any note in 1,000's of miles. 2 strokes just after the war would completely block the exhaust port as quickly as 3,000 miles. Nev
  21. Some rattle can engine cleaners are caustic too.. I don't use it on Aluminium.. In fact I've stopped using it at all. . Kero and hose of is better. Nev
  22. Nearly anything can cause a whistling noise. Just a raised edge of a door. Put a piece of plasticene at a likely spot and work through various locations. It doesn't need much to change it. Catalina's always whistled. You could hear it from the ground. That's how you knew it wasn't a DC 3. (Same motors). I think a Piper Tripacer also from the suction venturi. Nev
  23. No harm with polishing the piston tops.(too late now). It slows the formation of carbon. Soak in Genthin with about equal parts of thin oil with a sealed lid or use a commercial cold bath cleaner for AL. Sugar soap is most likely very alkaline. (Caustic). Nev
  24. Could have been a lot worse.. Nev
  25. I did add a bit of extra airspeed on climb than I did later to play it safe. I still think it's not a bad idea in a draggy plane. I would have also appreciated a smaller audience than at an Airshow. Be a Bastard to bounce it . Nev
