  1. Our greatest thanks John for your assistance in this difficult ongoing matter. Many detractors often point the finger at CASA in these matters but I for one am convinced that RA Aus have only been directed to address these issues by the regulator in the best interests for all in the future. The circumstances that led to this unfortunate intervention will continue to be a point of investigation and resolution ( and comment) for some time which we all hope leads to a more robust and accountable administration and management on behalf of our members within RA-Aus.
  2. Rank what you're interpreting is classic delay /stall tactics. The airlines do it every day when flights are delayed- as do many industries and business's -- they know it's a train wreck but don't want anarchy so they play the delay game- the the apology game then the blame game. Then the anger starts, then the blame game then the witch hunt then the solution then the clean up and legal. Watch this play out over the next few weeks- months- or..... years( hope not).
  3. Probably had its' registration fall due...
  4. Oh Shucks, I'm all embarrassed now.... thanks mate Love what you do to learn what you need.
  5. Never to old to be young I reckon.
  6. Hey Zib- "Stick and Rudder" was the first instructional text I read on flying- I found it in the library at 12 years of age and had about 30+borrowings stamped on the card by the time I was 15- we couldn't afford it then and no one had it any way. Grab them both, they'll change your life even if you only fly weight shift at the moment. Other great texts- Cross Country soaring- Reichmann( Amazon) Hang Gliding- Dennis Pagen. PPL- Jim Davis Never stop learning....
  7. Good read- helps us old farts that teach it remember we were young and apprehensive once- keep up the good work. Instructors are like air- some rough some smooth, often different but in the end air is air and it all helps you fly- look for the learning in every experience I reckon.
  8. Sapphire, in fact I find the opposite. The ab initio expects prompting and critique and you to" be there just in case". The more experienced pilot wants to "show you" that they know what they are doing. This narrows the space for the instructor to take an active involvement and also the space to take over when necessary. I run a different brief for both types and asssess closely as we go through the exercise.
  9. 2 mals in 400 jumps #21 and # 324 second was a dual opening due to RSL, ( PA modified the RSL routing following the incident report of my mal!- When questioned about the safety of skydiving we used to say do cars hnave a reserve braking system?....
  10. l Steve, it will be the greatest challenge AND greatest achievement you may make( well pilots are biased), you've been around a lot of good people so embrace it and go for it. My best wishes to you.
  11. In the end the only accident statistic that matters is the next one...AND MAKING SURE IT DOESN'T HAPPEN. That responsibility lies with every one of us to achieve this. The tools and signs to do this are all there, we just have to apply them ALL the time.
  12. I bet 3000 registered owners in RA are checking their renewal dates tonight....
  13. As temporary as this may be it is a very sad day for RA Aus administrators, managers and members to have the governing authority step in like this. One can only hope the level of professionalism , accountability and responsibility that resolves this issue is significantly greater and more robust than the levels that existed when this problem was first created. I wouldn't get the sign writer to do up the "VH" yet but this I hope is the closest we ever get it, watch this space over the coming days....
  14. Turbo that may be a legal consideration, and to a degree for conformity, but it shouldn't be the over riding determination. Some aircraft with a climb performance of 2-300 fpm in a tailwind influenced x- wind leg may end up 2-3 miles from the runway by the time they reach 1000 ft AGL, others and depending on conditions may reach it on upwind leg(as we were doing today) before turning x-wind at all, does this mean we should do a straight 180degree and fly virtually over the runway on downwind? Of course not! The turn decision, and the lookout to reference it are important elements of situational awareness, I teach it as part of the pre - turn assessment and lookout sequence. Good lookout represents good airmanship and referencing that look to your position is part of the process as well as for collision avoidance. Great to entertain some dialogue in the hope those watching may consider the circuit in this detail. Cheers!
  15. I just heard my Savvy calling out to me from the hangar" Hey dad their talkin about me and my sisters" it's Ok baby their only saying how beautiful you are. Go back to sleep- we'll fly tomorrow, I know all your cousins and neighbours are jealous but we all see the beauty"!! Nite Jaffa....
  16. Hi Jwh, I'll try to briefly answer your questions. As a CASA GFPT holder, assuming still current, you will be treated as a conversion so min 5 hrs time and or more to satisfaction of the training RA instructor/school.Mainly to ensure you understand satisfactorily low energy/inertia light sport and or low performance aircraft types.Obviosly you don't have full PPL priveledges yet so further endorsements can be provided under the RA banner. You will need to provide documentation to verify your current CASA priveledges. You will need to do at least RA air legislation exam and Human Factors assuming you have FROL.(Radio). Weight shift endorsement is separate and this will most likely take more time but this again will depend on your adaptabilility to higher drag low weight and weight shift principles- seek out a good school is my advice. RA has a number of high quality instructors that can give you the training to add to your Pilot certificate when you are ready. This can all be done within the RA-Aus syllabus and an appropriate school/s You don't state where you reside but I can provide some more detail if in SE Qld area. Good luck and welcome aboard!
  17. Give me a call Scott- glad to help... Neil
  18. Beaches are not ALA's- well 99 % of them anyway. Emergencies are a different matter. Better have the MAYDAY on tape for your defence, otherwise the joyride to look like the brochure may cost you, I know of at least 3 beach landings that went pear shaped in the last 12 months. Good idea at the time. aNd don't worry I've landed on Conway many times in the past, they used to run drag races there as well.
  19. I just BFR'd a guy who is just on the grey side of 80! Seems to me you have lots of time. Remember though things take longer to learn, and life habits hard to break or modify, as you get older so be committed yet patient and be prepared to work at it. All good things start with a dream....
  20. thirsty- barley and hops back to airfield..... Sounds like a great recipe for a beer! Well done. Worlds best motor glider.... Except you don't get to decide when to turn it off...
  21. GAFA- we would be glad to help you at GoFly- we have converted many GA and ATPL pilots. PM me if you would like to know more so we don't contravene site rules . Regards. Neil
  22. As CFI says both correct but try and run a business on owner/ builder training and see how far you get.... I really feel for every one caught up in this monumental debacle.
  23. Under the current CAR and relevant CAO only factory build aircraft can be used for training. I guess the thinking was that a factory and company with liability implications and statements of conformance and adherence to long held type certification provides some comfort if not guarantee that relevant ASTM standards for safe and robust manufacturing and design are adhered to. Every paying member of the public has the right to expect this in our industry if we are charging them for this service.....
