  1. Hi Ted and welcome! You'll find lots of people here to help you out with advice. Many people today start learning in "ultralights" - particularly planes like the Jabiru - because it's much cheaper and the hours will count if you later want to go for your PPL (so you can fly antique aircraft like the Cessna's and Piper's :stirring pot:). At our school, it's pretty much standard to go that way, then move across to the Warriors once you can handle the Jabiru (my instructor says if you can land a Jabiru you can land anything, but I think he's just trying to be kind to me 'coz I'm a slow learner!). Going the other way would be lots more expensive, and who knows you might enjoy the smaller planes so much you won't need your PPL!
  2. The hard copy AIP has a great diagram:
  3. Yeah - I reckon by the time the Jab made it to 10,000 it'd be time to head back down again anyway - I'd guess the last 1000ft or so would take some time.
  4. I thought up to 10,000ft on QNH was always available - but that FL110 (or even FL120) might not be available depending on QNH. Please correct me if I'm wrong ......
  5. I also leave the headset off until after start, for the same reasons as DD (plus, as Darky says, more chance of hearing other things). No point wearing it anyway, since the avionics are off during start anyway (and a few seconds of noise shouldn't do too much damage to the old eardrums).
  6. Always! Open the door and yell "Clear Prop". When I'm on the field, I have no trouble hearing others call clear prop - that, together with watching for rotating beacons is a "belt and braces" thing, along with being aware of what other planes are doing around you.
  7. Great review - once I get my licence, it's something I'd try (have checked the place out by road, it's very close to where Mum lives in St Leonards). Speaking of St Leonards, there's a strip there too (2 grass runways, roughly 10/28 and 18/36, each about 700m). Going by the fact it's in the centre of a NOTAM'd Restricted Area I presume they are using it to launch UAV's. It's not in any of the airfield guides, but I saw a contact number somewhere - anyone know it?
  8. Don't forget to look the other way as well - seen a few times where someone comes in on 18 when 36 is the active ......
  9. oops, sorry, not thinking! i_dunno
  10. The seats in the J160 are actually slightly (not much, only 50mm or so) aft of the CofG so not likely to affect backpressure required to lift nose.
  11. There's some stuff on Bindoon here. It's at 31°20'25"S 116°11'18"E.
  12. Definately Darwin Awards stuff! Almost as good as Lawn Chair Larry who got the 1982 prize for drifting into LAX CTA on his balloon assisted chair.
  13. Welcome rescue! You'll find lots of helpful folks here, it's a great site. As for age, wish I'd started when I was 50, I wouldn't have wasted a whole decade!
  14. Well done Neil - congrats! Can sympathise with your wife not wanting to go up - mine is the same, even hates Jumbo's!! Unfortunately, our daughters have inherited her fear of flying, so looks like I'll be doing a lot of solo stuff (that's if I ever nail my landings, of course!).
  15. Tomo, you might want to head on over to Goulburn and do the same with 08/26 to help Slarti out - on my Google Earth he missed the runway completely! :stirring pot:
  16. Congratulations Mike - well done!
  17. RAAus register shows it as a Rand Kar KR 2-S.
  18. Closest would be Apollo Bay (Marengo), Colac or Torquay - but all about 20nm as the crow flies. Unless I've missed some farm strips .....
  19. G'day combspilot, and welcome to the forum! Plus the curvature of the earth is working for you, so no problems!
  20. On my first landing up front in a 747, I was told bluntly "If you see us get up from our seats and head for the door don't stuff around, just FOLLOW US"!
  21. One for Mazda VH-ECI positively gleaming in the sun as YLIL t'other day ....
  22. Same with ours ....
  23. Tomo The RAAus Technical Manual has all the requirements - way I read it, with a trade you're off to a flying start . Formal training and qualifications in the technical trades seem to be close to the top of the list. You need to get some experience, and get a recommendation from two peers.
  24. Ah sirius thanks for that - it jogged my memory, I thought I remembered Richard's story but the old brain cells are not what they used to be!
  25. Not after today's lesson I won't (mind you there was about a 15-20 knot crosswind on 18, lots of mechanical turbulence over the trees leading to some interesting turbulence near the threshold of 36). Plus a bit of rain. Still, managed to handle it OK, but not pretty. Saw your solo entry in 4964's log!
