Hi Darky, Thanks for your reply. I really like your last line mate, (and who cares how long it might take - the fact that you, & (everyone) gets there is the issue at hand, isn't it?). A jet pilot instructor friend of ours gave us some excellent insight the other day. "If you would send your wife, and / or kids up with them - they are ready. If you wouldn't - you ALREADY know what they need". I deduct from your post that you really feel you are going well ahead? Great. Can I suggest something to you? Look around you, and pick the pilot you think is THE BEST one in your area. (you'd send your wife / kids with them), and ask for his/her HONEST opinion about your ability, and for their advice. This person might seem "un-approachable", but don't let it rest - ASK them! Take on board their advice, DON'T feel unworthy - (you are a new pilot, asking for advice from the people you trust the most!). That makes you worthy. I hope to meet you some day mate! Hi All, I am with nong, and his first post to you darky. Show your instructor these posts - it is honest feedback for him. My students get my patter almost constantly while I watch them conduct their pre-flight. As they get better, they get to hear me less!! (but they know all the answers to the questions you asked in your post, & more). As a student, you are the payer, & you are paying for SERVICES your instructor should be providing. Do you want to be a good pilot? You can't get there on your own!! You NEED to get value for your money - because that will mean you will ask and therefore learn more. If you need telling a hundred times (not saying you do - it is just an example), then you should hear it 100 times. Remember this please - "If it all goes "pear-shaped", you will recall your training. If you didn't get the training - the only thing left for you is - PANIC". You intend to take friends for a fly, don't you? Well, you owe it to them to be the VERY best you can be - don't you think? (Imagine how you would go about telling the partner of a passenger you fatally injured exactly what happened........ !) This occurs, sometimes. The reason I mention this is because we tend to forget that even though we have the fancy title of "Recreational Aviators", (it sounds easy, eh?), it is a fact that we are ONLY as safe & capable as we have been taught to be. With TRAINING - it is a very safe & rewarding occupation. Push forwards, & enjoy your increasing abilities!! Cheers for now, Nezzie

Hi All, Ideas & "tape"! What of it with a crosswind, or wind gusting, or variable winds? As an instructor, I teach that the student has their "butt on the centre-line", (and if the aircraft is pointing a little to the R, or L, then that is where the wind is coming from - be prepared). If it is pointing both ways from time to time - you have variable winds. (you might not have the luxury of a windsock, or it could be u/s). Cheers for now, Nezzie

Hi Chris, Great to see you are headed our way! Tie down your bird at the tiedowns on the airfield, and ring 08 8088 2722, The Lodge Motel. Close to CBD, all room types for your budget, and ring them upon your arrival, and they will pick you up from the airport. (Plus they are really nice). We suggest all our students, friends, and visitors visit them, (best deals), and you are most likely to meet our "extended area locals" there, because it is so well known by them! Time to solo Hi All, I don't fit the survey profile either, and I am happy to see the advice given, and also how it has been received by the newer pilots. Tony Hayes did a good job with his posts, and ended by saying that there is so much more, in many different areas, that he did not touch upon. Notice he didn't put an estimate on the average hours of that knowledge which he knows - is left? Because our knowledge should keep increasing until we die. (puts in place the little knowledge & ability a brand new Pilot Certificate holder has doesn't it?) My thought to pass on is this - how many pilots do we personally know that we wonder (even to ourselves) how they passed their tests, due even to a point as seemingly insignificant as lacking self confidence, yet taking on more than they should? Tony's point re- (good air to start flying training in) - excellent advice. It can be likened to the "Datum point" on a blueprint, which is the point where all measurements and construction begin. If this is followed, the thing blueprinted will work, but if not followed, can - if it works - hold nasty surprises down the track. There is no point in going solo as early as you can, you are better off gaining as much knowledge & ability from your instructor as you can, before you do. Cheers, Nezzie
