    Interesting usumption there, nobody is 'forced' to fly, that decision is up to the PIC, BUT many do due commercial or other external pressures.

    42degs down here today, last few days actually. I was more thinking that esky would be needed for grog and lots of it living up there! Flew into Roma years ago with the "Ruffdus", I think my KingAir sank a couple of inches into the black stuff!!

    Sadly Yenn that's all too true. What probably saddens me more is the empty legacy we have left our children's children. Successive inept corrupt Govt's who are short sighted and weak have essentially destroyed Australia, a far & wide brown land now more dersolate than it has ever been, geography wise and industrial wise -:(

    This is Australia where corruption, big business and the Govt are all in bed with each other, no one is steering Australia's resource ship in any direction other than towards greedy pockets! Australian citizens are just the miners!

    My eyes are outside the cabin looking for a suitable landing site proportional to the height I am flying at. Up high say over 3000' agl it's not so often but terrain dependant, down at 500' my head is on a swivel constantly & I'm only ever behind a Lycoming these days.

    Agree, I had a Bruce cover for my old Cherokee ( cover worth more than plane) but apart from being a pain to carry a& fit was worth every cent!

    Natural surface better in hot WX. Grass is ideal, a manufactured surface is always hotter.

    Thanks John, yeah been there done that (Airline gig) didn't much like it, I now fly private ops in in my own light aircraft, trust me it's nothing like the brochures say CASA are mainly in place to play police to the Airlines, GA is a thorn in their side mostly, RA & the other low end bodies are self governed so they kinda look after themselves. I'd say that if there ever was a situation where a FA said over the PA can anyone onboard fly a plane a dozen hands would go up then there would be a shit fight as to who gets to sit in the Capts seat....lolol If you are asked to land an Airbus then with help from someone on the radio and providing you are going to precision App airport pretty much anyone who is switched on could land a bus, no big deal

    Downunder most RA drivers have not had the exposure I have had with CASA & their predecessors over near 40 yrs from basic VFR SE flying all the way to flying RPT ops in an Airbus. I don't want to start a debate with others in here about that subject as this is not the arena for such matters it's just my opinion that is also shared with many many of my ex Airline colleges.

    Only last week a club member took off in his Pa28-140 on our grass cross strip 650m slight cross wind no h/w had two up fuel unknown but it was 35 degs with a DA of around 4800', I reached for my phone ready to dial 000, how he cleared the fence I'll never know! Probably reached for the emerg lever Pipers are well known for! Lucky no trees!!

    The beauty about Pvt. flying is you don't have to go -:) Yesterday I went for a quick spin around the block at 1930 hrs as the sun was getting low in the sky but where I drive my plane from had a density Alt of just under 5000 ft. I wonder how many drivers out there do Density Alt calculations? Plenty of YT vids showing divers who shouldn't be in charge of a lawn tractor!

    It's human to speculate, we are all judgemental ( it's a human trait) especially when we as pilots have an interest in the subject. Plenty of highly professionally trained pilots have flown into terrain in perfectly serviceable machines for all sorts of reasons & they will continue to do so, fact of life as flying is a risk, calculated mostly but still a risk. I hope the ATSB can get to the bottom of this tragic event so that someone out there can learn from it.

    CASA would Luv to ground all GA A/C & deal with the RPT guys, far safer. Remember CASA's Moto......safe skies are M/T skies

    Gee Frank that's even more a concern especially with your background! Reminds me of Part 61 & CASA's CASR's, 20 yrs of confusion & an utter waste of public money wth CASA themselves having little idea what's going on there in Fort Fumble!!

    The legalities of this sad event aside a fellow aviator has slipped the surly bonds of earth for the last time, we each face that day whether it be doing what we love or by natural causes. RIP, gone but not forgotten.

    Just purchase the slim line inflatable jackets the yacht boys use. They are an approved ASA std PFD type 1 costs around $40-70 each.

    I guess it's all about personal risk. What someone sees as safe another wouldn't ever go anywhere near such a machine. Flying is all about learning anyway, hope he has taken something away from this event other than keeping his life! Phew!!
